There is no need to abandon your opinion of helping one another though - only that we must not use violence to achieve it.

If so many people believe in the welfare of others, then logically speaking there should be no problem for them to contribute to those in need directly (or via a group of competing charities for example), especially given that half their paycheque is not stolen in a free society.

All it takes to buy into it is to realise that since the State is people, the State can’t do anything people can’t and it also has all sorts of problems unique to it. Anything people value, like security or water, is going to be produced.

Funny thing is, I can’t believe I sounded awfully similar to you before I came across the Austrian school, when I was 18 or so, except I was more of a monarchist and somewhat of a conservative.
