another author I used to make people look like buffoons was Szasz. The Manufacture of Madness and Schizophrenia, The Sacred Symbol of Psychiatry (might wanna throw in Anti-Freud, as well. it’s a really quick read) will be more than adequate in enabling you to recognize and demolish a lot of the BS you’ll run into in any social science class.
