Is there really Just War?

Strawman, and non-response. Try again.

-Jon

If I say it enough, does it become true?

lol, strawman or not, war will continue. Non-response or not, war will continue. I don’t need to “prove” anything…the proof will be in the headlines every day for you to see.

I don’t need to prove that the sun will come up, either. All I have is the fact that it has come up every day for the last billion or so years. All I have is a trend and no indication that anything has changed that would change that trend. The proof will be blinding me on my way to work tomorrow morning. Is this good enough for you? No, of course not, but that’s ok. The sun will come up tomorrow in spite of your scepticism. Just as there will be war tomorrow and the day after and the year after and the century after that, in spite of your delusions.

But-but-but…he used faulty logic! He used inadequate arguments! How can he possible be right!!!

You’re hopeless and I find that amusing.

Nope. But what does make it true is it happening. Which it will, whether you like it or not. As I said…that’s the beauty of it. I am not debating theory…I am describing reality. So I don’t need to convince you…all I have to do is wait until tomorrow morning and read the headlines. And wait 10 years and read the headlines.

Or are you still waiting to lay some real arguments on me that might prove me wrong?

BTW, I have yet to get a response (a real response) about how one might prevent or stop a mugging from occuring. Anyone care to take a stab at it?

You’re either a troll, or hopelessly stupid, or maybe even both. Re-read my argument and address it rather than erecting strawmen.

-Jon

Guys, we’ll always have the possibility of war, but free trade drasticaly reduces its likelihood. Friends?

Wrong. The free market solves nothing. The sun comes up. I’m right.

Because there’s nothing wrong with analogies between actions involving volition and actions involving physics.

Your aguments consist of name calling and ignoring history. Not much to address, I’m afraid. You might think yourself to be technically correct on every point, yet in the real world, your whole premise fails. You might think all of my arguments to be faulty and that I’m “hopelessly stupid”, yet in the real world, I’ll be right.

And that about sums it up.

Must be unbearable to have to deal with your intellectual inferiors, huh?

You’re refuting fantasies of your own making. I think there’s no point in discussing it further.

-Jon

The free market is great. I love the freet market. So far, it has been the system that has produced the most good for the most people. However, there are some things that even the free market cannot do, I’m afraid :frowning:

Again, you can belittle my arguments, but they turn out to be correct in the real world…warfare has been as constant in human history as the rising sun has been in the history of the world. Your inability or lack of desire to see that doesn’t change it. You keep attacking me and my ideas, but you have yet to offer any real alternatives…yes, the free market is great and does a lot of great things…but we are witnessing the freest trade that has ever existed and warfare is no less common today than it was 50 or 100 or 1000 years ago. All the other advances, communication, technology, whatever, they are all great, yet warfare is still ongoing with no signs of abating.

You find my model faulty and yours perfect…but my model better explains how the world really works and yours does not. So tell me again how stupid I am…

I’ve said several times that I’m amused and entertained. I have no other compelling reason to come back here, really. I have no delusions that you will be swayed…I’m just bored.

How many times do I have to say it? You don’t have to discuss it. You don’t have to be convinced. You don’t have to agree with me or even agree that I have a valid argument. All you have to do is read the headlines tomorrow and see that I’m right. You don’t even have to come back here and admit it…it’s enough that you know and I know that you know. And you’ll know that I know that you know. And that will bug you far more than your infantile attacks bother me; there is a certain satisfaction that comes from being right and knowing it.

What dunkel seems to be saying is that war will continue forever. Now, there’s something I don’t understand, partly because of my faulty English and partly because I’m plainly retarded. Why is he posting here, trying to convince a bunch of people who clearly are not listening, that he is ‘right’ ? If he’s right, then that’s the end of it. Why does he feel the need to assert a self-evident proposition, ad-nauseam ?

I mean, if he was a neocon, then his postings would make some sense, but he’s a libertarian…of sorts. Right LibertyStudent ?

In some cases, the free market can contribute to the lessed likelihood of certain kinds of war.

I will agree with that.

Okay, to make it simple and in terms that you will understand - you argued discussing the justice of war is a waste of time based on its inevitability. That is only true if ideas do not influence how people conduct themselves. You’ve not demonstrated that. Instead, you chose to harp on about arguments I never made and keep on insisting war is inevitable. So far from being right, you cannot even understand the argument I made.

-Jon

I came to this forum following another topic and stumbled into this one. I did not come here trying to convince anyone of anything. I’ve mainly stayed, especially this whole past day, because I’m bored.

I am intrigued by one part of what you say…one must be a neo-con to see that war isn’t going to end any time soon? A libertarian (of sorts) cannot look at what is plainly obvious and accept it as reality?

Free exchange doesn’t solve wars, but yes, it reduces their likelihood of happening for several reasons. There is a law that says, you’ll never have a war between two countries that have a McDonald’s. Seriously, people that hate one another can still trade which is a much more productive relationship than simply pillaging the other guy, so it discorages such attacks. There was a documentary in the Discovery about some guy that directs the remains of KKK, and it’s funny how this guy would do business with all kinds of people, always friendly with them, and he would go all over the place to rationalize his belief system with the reporter. You may still have wars over non-economic issue between two countries that trade, but it will be harder to motivate people than it otherwise would – besides, you’re going to enfuriate all its other trading partners…

I’m sure there is plenty of material on this; in particular, Bastiat has writtings on this I think…

If I have failed to respond directly to any specific arguments that you have made, I most humbly apologize. Seeing as how it’s about 5 against one, I cannot quite keep up with exactly who said exactly what and when it was said.

To address the specific point you just made about ideas influencing people, yes, I agree that ideas can influence people. Of course. I don’t think I ever said differently. But yes, I think that arguing the generalized idea of war being just is a waste of time, as in, it solves nothing. I have said that several times now. I also have said, in case you missed it, that, when confined to a specific war, the futility of the discussion is somewhat lessed.

War, in general, is inevitible, like it or not. Specific wars? Maybe, maybe not. The vast majority of what I have posted here, however, has been about war in general.

Does that help?

Seeing as whether a war can be just or not is an idea, you either must admit that discussing it is practical, or on pain of contradiction, deny this.
