This is kind of like the Nietzsche ‘Overman’ bad boy mentality. That society must progress through overmen who distance themselves from ‘the herd’ by creating ‘never seen before’ art masterpieces. Art like many things is a subjective interaction. I think Pollock has an interesting technique yet so does Picasso. If people wish to label Pollock ‘not an artist’ then I care not for why does art need to be objective?

Art need not be objective, but it need be effective. A Pollock is perhaps awe-inspiring but once that effect wears off it has nothing to say.

Pray tell what does the Mona Lisa have to say? Why look at any art that is no longer modern?

You do not “look” at art. You feel it. That is what it has to say.

You interpret art through visual stimulus. You witness the event and then formulate feelings on the subject. What feelings it produces is subjective to the viewer but you cannot look at art and feel absolutely nothing. Even if you ABSOLUTELY hate Pollock, his art stimulates you into an emotion.
