I weep for those geeks then. Next you’ll tell me they’ve never heard of Firefox, you know, that unknown opensource project? Or how about WebKit, the opensource engine that powers Chrome, Safari, and a few other browsers. They must not have heard of Mac OS X, which makes very heavy use of opensource software. Or Java,which is mostly opensource. Or Python. Or Perl. Or GCC. Shall I continue to list opensource successes?
None of those are businesses.
And this matters… why?

So the Mozilla Foundation didn’t make money, then? Last I heard they were taking in millions. And Mac OS is the what made Apple, and Java (and Solaris, which is now opensource) helped Sun out. There are also plenty of smaller players that have made cash selling opensource software, such as Trolltech (now part of Nokia, which is also pimping opensource software; Symbian, the most popular phone OS, is now opensourc). Also, just because the product does not make cash itself does not mean there is no gain. Employers like this sort of thing, and there is the idea of using software to sell hardware (eg Mac OS). Oh, and Tivo never used Linux to make their cash. No siree.

Google is a data business, not a software business. They don’t release any of the software that powers their core business. They don’t produce consumer software.
Google Chrome powers their core business (ie, it allows people to get to the Web, and from there to Google), and it is opensource consumer software. It is their hope that people will use Chrome so that there will be more adoption of HTML 5 stuff and better JavaScript engines. This in turn will make their offerings even better and reach a wider audience. HTML 5 needs no plugins, so it will be easier for all kinds of platforms to support what is needed.
Their search algorithms are protected, of course (and that is where most of their cash comes from, but they also make a lot on YouTube, which would be helped by HTML 5), but they do do things like give back to the Linux guys and the like. It is a way for them to share maintenance costs.
You cannot be saying this with a straight face.

I use these on a business basis daily. Believe me, I know what Google’s business model is.
