What is the best thing that government has created?

A colleague of mine today said the INTERNET was an example of a government creation that revolutionized our lives for the better. I get this government created the internet stuff a lot.. Any attempt to debunk this myth in a one or two liner always comes out as some desperate attempt to excuse government success.

Anyone familiar with a good article (perhaps here) that debunks this myth.

I was watching one of the videos in the “Economics for High School Students”, I think the one on technology.

The point was made was that the government created the Internet, but it really wasn’t used. It was just used by high tech companies and colleges.

It wasn’t until private enterprise came in and really put the Internet to use that it revolutionized things. An example of government creating something that isn’t useful until free enterprise finds a use for it.
