What praxeological precept(s) confirm anarchism over minarchism in providing for societal economic health AND societal security from external threats?

yuberries,

the following is my response to your diatribe that was based solely on unsupported opinion deviod of fact, logic, and empiricism:

Cite any physically violent private entity and I’ll tell you how it benefits from the state.

if coercion benefits the state (and it does) , it can indeed bring profit to the private entity. This is where the ancap anchors his flimsy dogma on the faith-based absurdity that coercion, and the utility of coercion, to achieve ends disappears in when the state is removed.

the creation of the state was not an end unto itself, it is a means to an end. Within ancap society, statist structures will metastasize to achieve ends. In contrast, liberal democracies have some checks, balances, decentralization, and transparency to forestall this inevitability.

The well known mafias all over the world for example benefited (and still do) greatly from the illegality of certain products. The cops take care of the efficient entrepreneurs, and all thats left is a black market where you have to pay off and/or fight the cops to stay alive. If drugs, gambling, or prostitution weren’t illegal, then the mafias would have to outcompete common businesses

another strawman argument.

Indeed, I dont dispute this assertion. However, it has nothing to do with rebut my earlier arguments.

In fact, I challenge you to post the quote in which I supported any of my arguments by citing the “mafia” or “organized crime”

in sum, stop manufacturing irrelevant strawman arguments to misrepresent my position.

By the same token, so are shoemakers. So what?

big difference strawman:

shoemakers dont have warships, bombers, nukes, et al. I would like to see a coalition of shoemakers coerce society into submitting to absolutism armed with penny loafers.

you are obviously clueless on the best means required to obtain power via force.

moreover, profit and growth in the shoe industry (and most other industries) is not a zero sum game. All shoemaking enterprises can achieve growth and profit without negatively impacting others. Moreover, like most consumer goods, these industries dont require advanced technologies, resources, or skill set to generate start-up companies to compete against monopolies.

In contrast, the security industry is a zero sum game. WHen one entity builds a single warship, it then becomes more secure relative to its competitors.

Indeed, I agree that those actors in the PDA industry will be averse to war. Thats why they will form dangerous coalitions, cartels, and monopolies to reduce risk and costs. When this occurs the next step to preserve power and profit is oligarchy followed by absolutism.

in sum, your arguments are hugely naive and faith based.

Not never, never. But much less likely to, than a state with a subsidized army. Because they take the full blows at their own expense, not with the lives of drafted soldiers or taxpayer money (emphasis added)

here you acknowledge that PDAs will engage in armed conflict. Note that once this happens, the genie is unleashed. In reality, competition for power and security among PDAs in ancap society will mirror that which occurs within the global geopolitic today and throughout history.

Indeed, the present condition in the geopolitic (as it has always been) is anarchic. We have abundant empirical evidence that conflict will exist when a central government is removed.

Lowly criminals who have nothing to lose, therefore don’t fear retribution.

here you imply that PDAs will only be required to subdue “lowly criminals”. by your logic, the only coercive elements in society will be lowly. this thinking is faithbased and absurd. Indeed, criminal and despotic behavior is not reserved for the common criminal – it is pervasive in all classes. The most brilliant and charismatic leaders in history who have wielded despotic power to great effect were dangerously and effectively coercive.

wakeup ancaps, your living in a fantasy world if you think that coercion to achieve ends will cease in an ancap society.

I’d suspect however that a society filled with people that support killing and stealing doesn’t last for long.

if that was the case thn the United States, China, and Western Europe would be the weakest societies on the planet. IN truth, this is another example of the grand naivete of the faith based ancap who rejects the utility of coercion to achieve ends (namely security, power, and wealth)

a society that effectively utilizes both soft and hard power to achieve ends will be the most successful. in contrast, a polyannish society that rejects coercion is destined for the ash heap of history.

perhaps this is why no ancap societies have ever existed and it is why its pacific adherents will never gain power.

Lol, jesus christ.

Is your state more “transparent, decentralized, and driven by security” than the PDA because you wrote in a piece of paper that they ought to be?

ignorance is bliss.

by any objective, rational, and independent thinking measure transparency among the disparate and competing branches and agencies within the federal government exist.

we have constant oversight of action of all branches and levels of government over each other. It is a system that has existed since the 1800’s

Moreover, we have decentralization of power in all branches and levels of government and military.

your “lol, jesus christ” is not a substantive rebut of this fact.

In contrast, ancap PDAs would have no checks, balances, decentralization, and transparency from other elements of society.

What are the incentives, rettoper, for a statist to be transparent, as compared to an entrepreneur?

a statist is dangerous, it has no transparency. However, your argument is a strawman since liberal democracies are rife with transparency. you cant fart in the oval office without someone putting it on twitter a minute later.

In contrast, there would be no firm mechanism for transparency in any segment of ancap society. both PDAs and sociopathic terror groups could operate with relative impunity.

ancaps need to exit this fantasyland thinking that “market forces” will deter coercion among the military and political classes in ancap society. They are both dangerous and we need substantive societal restriction on their growth and freedom.

He only has to be transparent enough to convince 50% of the active voters. Not even taxpayers, because not all taxpayers care; they just get their tax refunds, welfare, and vote for whoever’s on their party ticket like the last 4 years. And only in 1/4 of the years that come election time. Past that, who cares, his pay won’t go any higher, his reelection is just as certain. So that means, A politician doesn’t have to be even 1/8 as transparent as an entrepreneur. The latter which has to be as transparent as consumers want him to be, 100% of consumers, 100% of the time. Any lower and it means a direct profit loss to him. And as unpopular he becomes, the more he nears bankrupcy.

strawman again

i have never denied that the state is the architect of economic coercion and that this coercion is a survival level threat to society health and well being. My argument against ancap society is based solely on physical or military coercion which is arguably more dangerous.

in sum, you dont understand the substance of my arguments. There is a difference between economic coercion and physical (military) coercion.

within liberal democracies political and social freedoms have dramatically increased since 1776.

However, I will acknowledge that statists have found a backdoor to the acquistion of power, namely economic coercion.

However, the masses have uncovered these truths (1) the welfare state is a failure and (2) economic coercion by the state is the cause of our present difficulties.

It is far easier to remove the ability of the state to engage in economic coercion than to gut the entire system for anarchism (which is a quicker path to absolutism)

the best and most viable course of action is to use the existing system to attentuate government’s ability to use economic coercion to maintain power. Namely, remove the commerce clause from the constitution, states enforce the 10th amendment (as they are now doing), enforce the equal protection clause in the consitution that would eliminate progressive taxation, and a balanced budget amendment that would ensure any politicians who raise taxes would be voted out inthe next election.

The latter which has to be as transparent as consumers want him to be, 100% of consumers, 100% of the time. Any lower and it means a direct profit loss to him. And as unpopular he becomes, the more he nears bankrupcy.

absurd, consumers of protection just want protection – if their PDA of choice requires opaqueness to accomplish its mission, the consumer wont care.

moreover, if the entire PDA industry rejects transparency there is no mechanism to challenge them, save your angry shoemakers armed with penny loafers.

Decentralization? You got to be kidding me. One monopolized, coercive institution is more decentralized than every single entrepreneur in the area? You got to understand the market isn’t limited on how many companies are running, it means everyone. Everyone is a potential entrepreneur, and everyone is able to enter any market. A shitty market means profit opportunity for new companies. While a shitty state means everyone is f***d.

read my previous posts on the extreme degree of decentralization within the US defense establishment.

polyannish thinking to assume that the PDA or arbitration industries in ancap society will not eventually form coercive cartels and monopolies.

it only has to happen once for an instant to lead to the establishment of absolutism

moreover, the top PDAs would easily be inticed into forming a self-serving cartel to reduce costs and risk to the detriment of your brave and mighty shoemakers.

And you still don’t understand that the company only profits if it serves well that which its paid to do. For PDA, profit does mean it’s efficiency rate on defense; its ability to defend it’s customers from aggression. That is exactly what it means.

polyannish and shortsighted thinking.

you are stuck on the PDA as an exclusively law enforcement role. I understand that PDAs will use their unique and dangerous skill set to take and hold strategically valued resources and assets for profit. THese are the big players in ancap society not your local “sheriff PDA” that provides law enforcement and protection.

in sum, the big boys will gain their funding from mergers, acquistions, and takeovers. these are the entities that will assume absolutist power in an ancap society. Your cops on the beat will be powerless to defend against nukes, aircraft carriers, bombers, et al of well trained professional killers led by a brilliant and charismatic meglomaniac sociopath (see alexander, ceasar, tamerlane, charlemagne, napoleon, et al) .

He defends less, he profits less.

Indeed, I have pointed out numerous times that a PDA that did not provide adequate protections to a customers valued resources would be inviting predation and loss of that resource. IN truth, ancap society would experience constant competition and armed conflict for water, foodstuffs, mineral resources, energy, and other key geographical, political, economic, finacial, et al valued strategic centers.

He becomes less popular, he profits less.

you got that ass backward dude.

In sum, you claim to be an ancap yet you dont understand the fundamental point of ancap society — profits.

in your contradictory world, ancap society is meant to be moral AND profitable at the same time. in contrast I understand that morality is a subjective value judgment that has nothing to do with profits. If a PDA can gain a profit by coercion, then it will be done.

For a state? Votes mean nothing over the 50%+ needed, he’s either elected or not, It signals the chances he has of being reelected, sure, but nothing past that. His wage doesn’t go up, his job doesn’t become any easier. In fact, if a politicians approval ratings go up, it’s more likely an incentive to screw up; because he can “afford” losing some voter base and gain some cash in some corruption scandal, and still get reelected. And again, it’s only from four to four years, so he can actually screw around for three years and only compromise some useful work nearing reelection to look good. It’s much much easier to scam the people when you’re in government.

strawman dude.

I understand (and millions more do also) that pure democracy is tyranny of the masses or the majority. Thats why our founding fathers created a constitutional federal republic. We just need to tweek the economic shortcomings of the system to eliminate the tyranny of the majority in ecomomic matters.

the system has worked for political and social rights. It is no argument that minorities and women have more rights today than in 1776. however, provisions to protect private property and income were left out of the constitution or not enforced. SO the answer is not gutting the most popular, prosperous, peaceful, stable, and free system known to man for a failed ancap experiment.

we need to peacefully and aggressively reform the system we have. In the event that doesnt work, then the ball is in your court.

I have to run some errands, I will respond to the dogma from the enchanted kingdom where everyone loves one another and nobody wants security and power relative to his fellow man when I return.

We’re not Ancaps because an Ancap society in attainable and tenable. We’re Ancaps on principle. I’ve made this point to you already. Furthermore, we understand (or, at least, I do) that principal is irrelevant to you and that you seek what attainable and tenable, that is, liberal democracy (although, ironically, liberal democracy has always failed).–muffinburg

if you put value judgments or empty principles ahead of profits, growth, prosperity, et al your dogma has no practical use

your a utopian, the same as marx and other destructive socialists. The only difference is that you approach societal issues from the other direction.

moreover, the notion that liberal democracy is a failure is absurd. it is in ascendancy throughout the globe.

I acknowledge that our constitutional federal republic is not perfect, nor ever will be. however, I assert that it can be attenuated to reduce the ability of the state to use economic coercion to maintain power and privledge.

lastly, It is hypocritical when ancaps repeatedly cite the superiority of their favored system on empty moral grounds when so many of them are tenured academics or students attending universities on the public dole. Moreover, they denigrate liberal democracy which has lost many brave, talented, and decent men in women in its defense while ancap adherents wont even risk a single government handout to promote their favored system, much less a drop of blood.

Appeal to authority and appeal to popularity.–muffinburg

I am always amused when ancaps try to rebut my argument that liberal democracy is the favored system by citing “appeal to authority”

yeah dude, I am appealing to authority and popularity when I assert the superiority of liberal democracy over anarchism.

Unlike mathematics, whose truths cannot be denied by public opinion, try taking power with a system that has no support from the masses.

When will they fix the quote feature? Sigh…

Anyways, Rettoper, did you read the book yet? Surely with all of the free time you have at work, you can read a few chapters a day?

As senor Montebango of Toledo, Spain, would say, “que?”

Ironically and in opposition to your intent, that is a huge difference.

Is the USA the prime example?

You are a utopian.

Oh noes! I uses the sidewalkz as wellz!

Appeal to emotion.

Hans-Hermann Hoppe disagrees with your argument in favor of liberal democracy, therefore, you are wrong.

Who’s said we don’t need support from the masses?

ultima,

sorrry for the late reply, I missed your thoughtful earlier post through the detritus of the thread.

I will read the machinery of freedom this week, thanks for the info.

Your idea that PDAs will war in order to optimise resource usage is an interesting one Rettoper, but I think you are underestimating the opportunity costs of engaging in warfare. Were opportunity costs zero, then your scenario might hold, but they are not zero. A PDA would have to stand to gain a heck of a lot, indeed, for warfare to be worth it.

I have never disputed that opportunity costs exist when coercion is used. Moreover, I acknowledged in numerous posts that the most efficient and prosperous method of exchanging valued resources is through voluntary peaceful means. Indeed, history has shown that mankind is largely peaceful irrespective of whether the system in power is anarchic, statist, or democratic.

Nonetheless, there exists elements in society that covet resources, security, wealth, and power to the extent that they would use coercion when peaceful means are not available. Hence, war.

moreover, the PDA industry is driven by profit. And if they determine that scarce and valued resources that are inadequately defended by an inferior force can be acquired through coercion resulting in a net gain in security, wealth, and power for the aggressor PDA and its employees, management, investors, and customers – then war will result irrespective of whether society is ancap or multi-system.

confirmation of this is the current geopoltik which is anarchic and obviously rife with conflict between the competing “PDAs”

.It’s still something to consider, though. In a hypothetical ancap world, what happens to the PDA that invades a peaceful environmental area sitting on some uranium? Were there a large number of competing PDAs (just as there are a large number of competing states today), such aggressive actions would be condemmed and retaliated upon by other PDAs. Is that uranium worth it?

nothing would happen if an aggressor PDA took scarce resources from a weak and poorly run PDA that had not invested the appropriate force to defend a valued resource.

History has shown that when any aggressor attacks those not directly involved are loath to risk resources and security to wage war to defend another state or enclave. ONly in extreme conditions do nations engage in war when not directly attacked. At best, they provide some measure of material support if possible, but generally they do not risk life, societal wealth, and security to defend alien enclaves under attack.

Indeed, the primary goal of ancap PDAs is profit — Where is the profit in wasting resources to defend competitors customers ? Moreover, the ancap adherent is the poster child for isolationism. the notion that these die-hard pacifists would take up arms to get in the middle of foreign wars is not supported by reality.

The USA’s military power far surpasses everyone else, but there are important reasons why they don’t simply drop nukes on Iraq and Afghanistan, or why they are so careful to avoid killing civilians today, when burning Japanese and German cities to the ground, killing millions, was fair game only 70 years ago. Ask yourself why they don’t do that today. You’ll see why conditions are more conducive to ancap today than they were in the past (and why they will keep being more conducive in the future), and also why such overt military action is condemned. The USA was a democracy then, as it is now, and Iraq and Afghanistan are not democratic, yet the USA does not nuke them.

Your post supports my argument that liberal democracies are far more peaceful and humane than PDAs in an anarchic society since those that profit, command, control, oversight, allocate funds and wage war are separate from those that fund war. The American people fund the war machine and they are loath to allow the military to engage in wanton slaughter. In contrast, within anarchic society those that fund, wage, command, oversee, control, and benefit from war are all the same entity without a shred of transparency.

unlike ancap profit driven PDAs, those of liberal democracies are driven by the promotion of life and liberty. Indeed, the USA spends tens of billions of dollars on weapon systems that are designed to minimize civilian causalties. WE could easily accomplish mission objectives at far less costs by dropping unguided massive bombs, yet the AMerican public rejects this policy. We bombed japan and germany to end the war quickly thereby saving lives. The atom bombs dropped on japan cost over 300k lives in contrast Operations coronet and olympia would have cost over 5 million japanese and American lives. Moreover, if the war continued it was possible that the US would have suffered greatly from attrition that would have benefitted the soviet war machine and very well might have led to the overthrow of western europe by soviet tanks while the bulk of the AMerican military was engaged in japan in 1946.

These opportunity costs can be quite large, but we don’t really have any way of knowing them as we have never experienced a true ancap society, and I don’t think we will be seeing a pure ancap world anytime soon. The more interesting scenario to discuss is ancap living inside a statist world.

true, I have always stated that the best chance for the ancap experiment would be in a world dominated by liberal democracies. When/if this occurs then ancap enclaves can form without the threat of external coercion. My concern is that these enclaves if not adequately protected by liberal democracies will morph into unstable and expansionist statist or terrorist cancers.

Yes, these elements are known as the state.

All human action is guided by profit, both peace and violence. If you do not understand this basic praxeological notion this deep into the discussion …

I would say that most if not all statists are utopians. The notion of collectivizing and centralizing power in order to prevent the collectivization and centralization of power can only be held by someone who is confused, unserious or deluded. Utopians reside in this latter category.

I agree with you. However, for someone unfamiliar with the idea behind ancap, it seems that the “night watchmen” state is the best alternative. How do we better illuminate that this is not necessarily the case, due to the point you raise?

There is a decent argument in this thread: What will be different about the future so that the power-grabbing factions will be kept in check? If only this point could actually be argued instead of thousands of pages of “strawman!” by both sides. Governments exist because they do benefit some people at the expense of others. Whether or not they are immoral is besides the point, they exist whether we like it or not. Where Rettoper comes from, there are millions more like him. I don’t think it’s going to be settled until we see an actual ancap society in existence. The most important question is “How?”

Rettoper, what is needed to build this is not blood, but capital, and technology. Shedding blood doesn’t help because there is currently nothing in existence to defend, and with most of the masses wanting more socialism if anything, shedding blood would just lead to a revolution in the wrong direction. I believe (and hope) that should ancaps actually have territory to call home, they would defend it. Seasteading is one possibility, but I would like to see this take off soon. If I had capital, I would do so, myself

Rettoper, not even once in this thread I’ve seen you make a praxeologically valid argument. You don’t use methodological individualism, you just jump straight to macro and makes broken assumptions of the same category keynesians do, minus the math. You have to show why, individually, people working in a PDA would more likely accept and want to work in a TERRORIST CANCER (an appropriate description of the CIA btw), than people in a state. You have to show why the PDA has more incentives (profit, power, all of it) than compared to the state (profit, yes, profit, by corruption, and power, unadulterated, monopolistic, coercive power) vis-a-vis, in relatively equal cultural backgrounds and geopolitical sphere.

You just keep asserting PDAs would be violent because it’s profitable, when we already explained over a dozen reasons why it’s not. And if it was just that, it wouldn’t be that bad, but you have the audacity to claim the state would be less violent, when we also shown tons of incentives that it’s just not the case.

Countries in the world are in an anarchic relationship amongst themselves, but they also behave more akin to children who got shotguns and rifles to play with in the backyard. The political leaders got an army at their feet for free. They can draft millions by request. It is an anarchic relation insofar their relations go, but not for what they can do to eachother - their power has been elevated by coercion; they would not have all that they have, if their subjulgates were not forced to pay them tribute. So to blame wars on their anarchical relations alone is ignoring the fact that they can fight virtually for free; not a cent from their bank account is affected, their families are exempt from military service, or at least far from the battlefield. And if it comes to worse, they’re out of office in a few years anyway. The most he has to fear is an invasion to his capital; but before that happens, he has ample coercively obtained resources to defend himself for free.

The PDA CEO has to make do with what he has, and do what he’s been hired to do. Every bullet has to be paid for, so any large scale commitment to violence is going to come at a direct profit deduction before any returns are made, and it will be noticed by the investors and costumers by lower returns and higher premiums. The statist? All that happens in a taax hike is greater discontent, but discontent doesn’t diminish his profits as directly as the PDA suffers from it, the statist has a much wider gap between discontent and loss, because he only loses really if he’s impeached or overthrown, and the amount of discontent needed to make that happen is far greater than it is for a PDA to go bankrupt; the PDA could merely become the second-best provider of security, from first, to have big losses. The CEO surely gets replaced then. The state has no competition to worry about; no price signals, no market incentive, apart from revolution.

But I’m repeating myself all over again and this won’t teach you anything, will it. You still believe businesses can make profits off breaking windows, so, I don’t know what else can I say for now.

You concede every point about AE but then rejects that it applies to private defense, because apparently PDAs are able to fool everyone, become the new state, and get away with it. It’s as childish as saying bank robbers could consistently go around robbing banks, or auto thieves could rob the same street repeatedly. You’re underestimating market intelligence one eighty degrees. If even you, a silly statist, can see the problems that could arise from PDAs having guns (oh noes), believe it, other people thought of that already, and they already have better solutions to qualm consumer unease better than a state can qualm citizen unease. Because they directly profit from it, yes, and that is a great thing. Because unlike the state, they aren’t monopolists and a revolving door for sociopaths to gain huge amounts of power for free.

All human action is guided by profit, both peace and violence.

Exactly how is taking a bullet for someone else (assuming it costs your life) profitable?

Also, what if I give charity to someone I know will misuse it, is that profitable? (I gues sthis one could be explained that i get some kind of spiritual profit)

muffinburg,

As senor Montebango of Toledo, Spain, would say, “que?”

my point was that PDAs in ancap society would be motivate almost entirely by profit.

private enterprises that placed morality, value judgments, and ethics ahead of profit would go bankrupt.

Ironically and in opposition to your intent, that is a huge difference.

my point is that both marxism and anarchism are failed systems because both are founded on unsustainable unrealistic utopian frameworks. marxism believes that the individual will reject security, profit, and power for the collective state while anarchism believes that the individual will reject security, profit, and power for the collective market

Is the USA the prime example?

I am always amused when adherents to a fringe system that has never existed and has no support from either the masses or elites condemns the most popular system on the planet as “failed”

if liberal democracy is a failure, then anarchism is the speck of dog detritus in a small crack on the heel of the right shoe worn by liberal democracy. that joins the detritus that represents monarchism, chattel slavery, imperialism, fascism, communism, and religious extremism.

You are a utopian.

manifestly absurd.

liberal democracy exists. moreover, it is the most popular, peaceful, prosperous, stable, and free system yet developed that is both viable and strong enough to deter statist advances both externally and internally.

nonetheless, I acknowledge that the system needs to be attentuated to reduce the coercive impact of statist policies on economic issues.

however, the trend in europe toward dramatically smaller government has shown that liberal democracies can institute change in a dynamic and peaceful manner when confronted with the collapse of the welfare state.

Oh noes! I uses the sidewalkz as wellz!

ignorance is bliss.

there is a difference between expenditures designed to benefit all citizens relatively equally and those that go to a selected group of parasites.

sidewalks, national defense, law enforcement, et al are examples of expenditures that are equally beneficial. however, when tenured ancap professors and their impressional students on the public dole receive public largesse, they represent hypocrite parasites.

in sum, if these parasitic ancaps didnt have double standards, they wouldnt have any standards.

Appeal to emotion.

the whole ancap argument is an appeal to emotion in that it believes in the polyannish notion that the utility of armed coercion to achieve ends is rendered obsolete by “market forces” Moreover, emotion is indeed a factor in human events since the ancap adherent has not demonstrated that they have the emotional wherewithal to risk life, limb, wealth, and sacred honor (much less the next government handout) to defend their system of choice.

Hans-Hermann Hoppe disagrees with your argument in favor of liberal democracy, therefore, you are wrong.

then herr hoppe can walk into the oval office and declare himself.

In the meantime, as a matter of princple, I am waiting for herr hoppe to pay back the hundreds of thousands of dollars in government largesse that he has received all these years hypocritically touting a system that condemns government largesse.

Who’s said we don’t need support from the masses?

I didnt.

YOu cant promote a system if the masses and elites in business, arts, politics, academia, science, et al think your system is fringe.

Rettoper, not even once in this thread I’ve seen you make a praxeologically valid argument.–yuberries

give me the praxeological tenet that rebuts my assertion that a PDA cartel can assume oligarchic power within ancap society?

moreover, I have repeatedly offered logical arguments to support my postions.

  1. if a PDA cartel determines that it is profitable to annex valued resources by force when peaceful means are not available – they will.

  2. PDAs are driven by profit, not morality, value judgments, or ethics.

  3. PDAs that place morality and ethics ahead of profit will fail

  4. investors require return on investment – if an aggressive PDAs can deliver profits to investors, employees, customers, et al – then they will prosper.

  5. the top PDAs will form a cartel to reduce costs associated with armed conflict and defense expenditures.

  6. no effective societal deterrent is available to deter a dominate PDA cartel from assuming absolutist power.

  7. security relative to other power blocs is a zero sum game.

  8. valued resources must be defended with a force commensurate with the value of the resource or strategic asset or that asset will be subject to predation by a competitor PDA

  9. arbitration agencies and PDA are driven by profit. profit is more likely as competition decreases.

10 ) PDAs and arbitration agences will form cartels to reduce costs, increase security, and power.

  1. funding, command, control, R&D, intelligence, law, oversight, and the profits from armed conflict are all controlled by the PDA

  2. funding, command, control, R&D, intelligence, law, oversight and the profits from armed conflict within liberal democracies is shared by disparate and competing agencies, societal elements, branches of government, branches of military, and all levels of government.

this is the short list, and I have not even begun to discuss the empirical evidence throughly debunking anarchism.

Nice!

I understand where you’re coming from, because many people think the same way, and it’s not necessarily intuitive how an anarcho-capitalist society will function when it intuitively feels like lord of the flies, or perhaps Somalia. In my view, anarcho-capitalism is not anarchy as that term is commonly understood, but it is an evolution of the best of the governments that we have today. It shares all of the qualities of liberal democracies that lead to less warfare, without the corresponding coercion and trend toward socialism.

I don’t see liberal democracies as the pinnacle of freedom or progress. I appreciate that we can have these discussions on an internet forum, whereas in less free places we might be imprisoned for doing so. Nonetheless. a government is always about a balance between grabbing as much power as possible and keeping the people from revolting. The way forward is via technology and education.

This same increase in technology and education is the real reason why mass institutional violence is on the decline. As society increases its wealth and becomes more complex, it becomes more profitable to trade with your neighbours, and less profitable to bomb them or enslave them.

The free market system is the only form of organization that does not rely on politicians to be like Mother Teresa in order to really have a system that benefits everyone and does not violate the rights of some to improve the lives of others. Special power and privilege tend to bring in bad habits, even in good people. Give people power by decree, and they will not relinquish it voluntarily. A night watchman state, or even a liberal democracy sounds nice in theory, but because the systems are ultimately composed of men, they are problematic. All systems that give a special class of people power over others and then expect that none of them will use that power for their own benefit are doomed to failure. In ancap, we don’t just give people power; they have to earn it, and it is not inherently theirs.

Now, is it time for us ancaps to put our money where our mouths are? Sure. I disagree with you about the bloodshed (see above to see why), but I do believe in evolutionary processes toward that goal. Simply having this discussion is a start, don’t you think? Whether or not you disagree with us today, at least you’ve been exposed to the idea, and I appreciate that you take the time to read this book (among others) to really get a feel for what’s behind the theory.

epicurus Ibn Kalhoun,

Exactly how is taking a bullet for someone else (assuming it costs your life) profitable?

I have never said that “all human action is guided by profit, both peace and violence”

I have stated that ancap society will be driven by profit. Indeed, if professional warriors in ancap society believe they will be handsomely compensated for a successful plunder of a valued resource then you will not be wanting of volunteers.

however, liberal democracies do not wage wars for profit (that is one reason why they are peaceful) – -the liberal democracy wages war for ideological motives, or more accurately the preservation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Also, what if I give charity to someone I know will misuse it, is that profitable? (I gues sthis one could be explained that i get some kind of spiritual profit)

few would give charity to someone they think will misuse it. Whenever I have given charity to beggars that appear to be in real distress (not panhandlers), I issue food instead of money. unfortunately, I once caused more harm than good when after a NAVy- Army football game on a cold december in philly, I set down a large bag of white castle hamburgers next to a sleeping homeless man in an alley. as I was returning to my warm car, a feral dog attack both the startled man and the bag.

another example of well intentioned, yet failed socialism

You just keep asserting PDAs would be violent because it’s profitable, when we already explained over a dozen reasons why it’s not. And if it was just that, it wouldn’t be that bad, but you have the audacity to claim the state would be less violent, when we also shown tons of incentives that it’s just not the case. --yuberries

strawman.

produce the quote in which I said that statist regime would be less violent than ancap society

however, I have offered numerous posts explaining why liberal democracies are less violent than ancap and statist regimes.

primarily, the levers of power are disparate, competing, and transparent within liberal democracies.

in contrast, within statist and PDAs the levers of power are centralized, opaque, and self-serving.

it doesnt get more logical than that dude.

and if logic doesnt float your boat, then read this.

I have never said that “all human action is guided by profit, both peace and violence”

I was responding to Libertystudent

however, liberal democracies do not wage wars for profit

Tho I agree with many of your general statements, I would rephrase this. America’s latest incursion into Iraq was solely for profit, and any other attempt to say otherwise is naive.

few would give charity to someone they think will misuse it.

Eh, I never really even think about it. I go "give a man a fish and teach him how to fish (but, for real, give him a fish in the meantime). But I realise I am a very small minority.

The political leaders got an army at their feet for free. They can draft millions by request. It is an anarchic relation insofar their relations go, but not for what they can do to eachother - their power has been elevated by coercion; they would not have all that they have, if their subjulgates were not forced to pay them tribute.–yuberries

ignorance is bliss.

you obviously dont have more than a primary grade school understanding of the political-military defense establishment within liberal democracies if you believe that rubbish.

you mistake statist regimes like china, soviet union, et al for liberal democracies that are inherently peaceful to like minded nations.

moreover, political and social rights within liberal democracies have been dramatically improved and strengthened in the last 200 years.

we need to resolve the issue of economic coercion from government to complete the trifecta of freedom – not adopt a unpopular and unsustainable ancap system that every statist would be in support of since it represents their best chance at a return to absolutism.

shrug

I guess that makes 3 for me!

Someone should tally up the number of overtly wrong false assertions pooling up in this thread…

since you are apparently an objective, independent thinking, and rational source, IMHO your statement carries more weight than from the drones on both the left and ancap right that believe in conspiracy theories and intrigues while neglecting 99% of the facts.

I agree that the war in Iraq would not have been fought if saddam wasnt astride 70% of the globes most accessible oil reserves. However, if for profit means preserving the life blood of western civilization (and 95% of the energy used in transportation in the USA) from being irradiated or contaminated by WMD from a miscalculating meglomaniac, then yes Iraqi freedom was for profit.

Indeed, africa has been the beneficiary of hundreds of billions in charity largesse to little or no postive effect. ancap society would be better than what is now experienced in africa. however, botswana, namimbia, ghana, et al have benefitted from a form of liberal democracy, while anarchism has not shown much promise in other parts of africa (somalia).

We need to find you an easy to read introduction to praxeology. It will make a lot of statements on this board much clearer.

Anyone got a source for Epicurus? Video or audio will do as well.

Also, please share it with Rettoper since he seems to be confused about what praxeology is!
