The modern market is a creation of the state - free market systems are always created by forcefully destroying non-market indigenous community traditions.
I am NOT a fan, but Naomi Klein makes very similar arguments against Clinton-era (as well, I’m sure, against other eras) IMF policy with regard to the Asian financial crisis: i.e. imposition of quote-unquote “free markets”, in trade for bailout assistance. We all know, however, that “free market” never means free markets, when government agency is involved.

Is the more likely truth, imo. The state directs the economy to whichever ends it sees fit, free markets or not.
EIDT: Not that they ever choose free markets. To do so is to simultanously choose to give up control. Not. Gonna. Happen.

Sorry to necro the thread but I have been pouring over many of my notes and old research papers lol.
Here’s the thing you have to remember when you think of people settling down into the neolithic and later bronze age city/states; It wasnt “people” that settled down. Tribes had always had the land they went to and the land they returned to (whichever way you want to look at it), they just gradually started choosing one land as the production of grains and other plants increased. The need to migrate at all began to decrease.
Agriculture allowed populations to increase dramatically, and men pursued other ends, eventually discovering bronze. Bronze became a valuable trading commodity and directly lead the formation of truly urban settlements (in Mesopotamia).
Setllements developed from (in some instances) Single room houses for the male, surrounded by his 6 or 20 wives in one room houses with their children. There would be 200-2000 of these houses in a given area, marking the tribe’s “community.”
Sometimes these communities were centered around an easily defensilble point, sometimes around religous centers. Sometimes just arbitrarily placed near a water source.
Look up neolithic, Uruk period, Jamedt nasr period, bronze age, Ur, Sumer, Memphis (Egypt), any early city-state, and the later Sumerian, Akkadian, and Egyptian civs.
