I too listen to mainstream news but always with a critical ear and taking it with a pinch of salt.I’m always conscious of how it may be spin to make X side look bad,the market look evil/weak etc,and inspire devotion to the state.Mainstream news is highly statist and manipulative.I don’t know how many times I came across the ‘ground zero mosque’ lie recently. Some sources said in the same breath that it was a ground zero mosque and that it was also not a mosque but a cultural centre ,four blocks away. How stupid!
So basically if I’ve reading mainstream newspapers or watching mainstream news I keep libertarianism in mind and if any of the libertarian sites mentioned above have spoken of it I keep in mind their insights so I remain skeptical.
Mainstream news - BBC (but not news 24 because that’s mind numbing if you’ve seen all the best of it after an hour or so) ,their website occassionally, msn news and rarely I’ll read a paper like the sun or daily mirror or daily mail but NEVER the guardian.
Oh and before I forgot there’s quite a good online political magazine- Spiked- I discovered a while back.It covers news but usually talks of the deeper issues. It makes no claim to be unbiased. It’s leftist but not in an extremely pro-state way. It’s been called libertarian(it’s not though) and the writers said they weren’t but weren’t very critical of that and some libertarians do write for it.It’s quite good on a range of libertarian and libertarian related issues:- pro free speech(even for the BNP), critical of war on drugs, anti-libel laws, anti foreign interventionism,anti-empire,critical of labour party, skeptical about global warming and environmentalism, critical of animal rights, critical of war on terror, aware of political manipulation of fear ETC.The only problems it does have is that in the end it is still statist and isn’t radical enough.
