The guy’s main point seems to be his critique that there is no such thing as “a priori” knowledge.

DIdnt Mises handle this criticism almost a century ago? Science is good for talking about and examing physical phenomna, but when it comes to social phenomia there are literally billions of indvidual actors in play. Theres no way to accurately measure human action…

We can however make general observations about human actions: for example people act purposefully, and make extrapolations from that.

when two individuals engage in voluntary trade, they do so because of a (subjective) ex-ante value inequality. you consider it, you understand it is true. what is the empirical basis for this? do we need an empirical basis for this fact of value inequality?

He calls Austrian Economics a moral philosophy in his opening paragraph. Is the blogger really worth responding too?

The post in question is an attack on rationalism.

The blogger isn’t “seriously” worth responding to on his objection to the austrian school. He should read up more on critiques of rationalism and responses.

Oh, nevermind. It’s that guy. He’s not that bright when it comes to philosophy.

Now that’s just embarassing. Whether a model is accurate or not is a value judgment. That is what your belief in a model is based on.

My problem with these types is that they switch between using logic and illogic to argue their points. Do they accept or reject logic? Do they accept or reject a priori reasoning?

is he hoping that Austrians will respond with logical arguments?

Doesn’t positivism - the very foundation of “science” itself - rely on a priori knowledge when it asserts that the only real truth is that which can be verified empirically? That assumption itself is not empirically verifiable… or am I missing something?

Yes regular positivism is stupid. Logical positivism is nice though. You can learn a lot of things from it. See language truth and logic by AJ Ayer

Also, it might not be appropriate to bring up here; but a lot of people who take about epistemology in such a way usually take the stance of only looking at the data. I have a parable regarding this:

Imagine we had no theory and only data. A rain-dancer is testing the effect of rain-dancing on the occurence of rain. So, beind a good scientist he has a control, a rain-dancer with no feather on his head. And he has test groups of rain-dancers in various controlled conditions and locations with 3 different types of feathers in his head…

This is why theory is important and needs to be analyzed.

I’d have to believe the entire thing’s a joke if such writings were not the standard modus operandi of political philosophy. The guy contradicts himself practically every other sentence.

Lets put it this way: this critique is so laughably bad, and this guy so illiterate in philosophical questions, that he’d fail the most basic of introductory courses in Philosophy. He’s basically making things up. :slight_smile:
