A few questions (free market as a natural system, institutional racism, etc)

The comparisons that my book used were to the 1996 overall average score. So that was the score it set to 100. The scores from previous years and modern scores from certain race groups were then compared to the 1996 data and assigned an IQ based on that.

The American IQ comparison over time is on page 319 of the textbook, the source cited is (Hogan, 1995) which refers to"Get smart, take a test" Scientific Analysis, pp.12 to 14

The race IQ comparison is on page 324-325, I was incorrect in saying that the average IQ for blacks at the writing of this textbook was 70, the source says 85 (I think I confused it with something else). The source cited is (Avery & others, 1994) which refers to “Mainstream science on intelligence” Wall Street Journal, p. A-18

Um, no. IQs are a set measurement - if they go up in the population, the average goes up. Historically, average IQ has changed over the years for several groups, often rising. But you don’t figure out the average for your test group, then adjust everyone’s score so that the average is 100. If you get a score of 137 as part of a group whose average is only 90, your IQ is still 137 when you go to a Mensa meeting. IQ can change for a given person, depending upon the circumstances of the test, their alertness, recent reading, and like that - but the scale remains a constant.

Marko - that bit about the Irish batallion in the Mexican-American war was interestin’ - my studies of history are woefully incomplete. Am I correct in reading that to say that they defected because of their mistreatment, or was it more based upon feelings of solidarity with other Catholics? If you can recommend a good book covering that topic or period, I’d appreciate it.

Danno, recalling them sayin’ that the more I learned, the more I’d be aware of my ignorance. Damn them!

um yes

Intelligence Quotient–noun Psychology. an intelligence test score that is obtained by dividing mental age, which reflects the age-graded level of performance as derived from population norms, by chronological age and multiplying by 100: a score of 100 thus indicates a performance at exactly the normal level for that age group. Abbreviation: IQ

Although the term “IQ” is still in common use, the scoring of modern IQ tests such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale is now based on a projection of the subject’s measured rank on the Gaussian bell curve with a center value (average IQ) of 100, and a standard deviation of 15, although different tests may have different standard deviations.

if you want to argue with the definition of the term feel free, or maybe you’d like to argue over “chair” “leg” or “hairdryer” instead.

I do think that there is definite substance to some of what she has to say, but she must understand that these realities exist and have existed for decades in a socialist system. The unfortunate reality is that no system (socialism, fascism, laissez-faire capitalism etc.) will be perfectly equal and harmonious. It is against human nature to view and treat every being as equal; it simply cannot happen. If she is to believe that Socialism/Marxism is the answer to cure all of the ills in society, tell her to look around and weep because she has it and it persists.

Let me congratulate you on the first part of the quote. Despite the efforts of politicians and the media, we are not and have not been a free-market system for a very long time. The fact that your question suggests you recognize this fact shows you are much more solid footing in learning Austrian economics than you think!

Ill have to come clean here that when it comes to American history I mostly got the pub version. So Im afraid you`re on your own here. But I got the feeling it was the first, else they would have emmigrated to Mexico in the first place no?

I recalled the average black was actually doing better than white Americans before the advent of mininum wage law or something like that? Rothbard wrote this on the issue of miniunum wage law. My memory is not that accurate now.

In any case. I think why miniority tend to raise themsleves above povetry was because they determine to overcome and build better lives for themsleves. This is probably true for millionaires. I read a book that talked about how millionaires were pushed around by their peers.

In my hypothesis, people overcome adversaries and adversarial situation if and only if they’re resolved to do it. Nothing to do with IQ and more to do with culture and environment.

“No dogs or Indians.” No matter who the British were stepping on, they were really consistent about picking on dogs.

Liberty Student, happy to see Danno back in action.

Speciesism! Obviously social justice can only be realised if government institutes affirmative action for dogs.

I’d like to point out that the original intention of IQ testing wasn’t to measure an absolute quantity of mental/logical capacity, but rather to gauge the average ‘intellectual’ age of students. Also, it’s well known that much of the factors in IQ scoring is easily skewed based on word preference, subject matter, presentation, and a host of other factors.

Plus, IQ measures do not measure other forms of intelligence, which for me as a wouldbe AI theorist are perplexing, are yet to be fully understood by psychologists or neurologists. So, for the rest of the thread, please don’t buy into IQ scores equal pure intelligence, because they don’t based on the facts at hand (and probably they never will).
