Yes. As long as people continue to believe in superstitions, this kind of nonsense will continue. This is why I feel it will be a VERY long time before governments are abolished entirely, if ever.
Does the local grocer ask of us to be referred to only in pluralis majestate?

I don’t see why it would change, other than some of the more extreme examples. People who occupy positions of power are afforded respect and deference. I’m not sure anything is wrong with that. I would hope that most here would refer to their boss as “sir” or “ma’am” and alter your behavior while in their presence.
If a person is to become a private “judge” he would only be able to attain that position by earning the respect of the community that they serve. Using the terms your honor or the honorable dosent seem out of place when referring to someone who is trusted to mediate fairly between two parties.
Also think of some of the private traditions where we accept ridiculous behavior.
Only those who do not command respect must demand it.
