The Real Lincoln can be found in PDF here. There is also a torrent (~24MB) that includes an OCR version if you want to be able to search terms.

That OCRed PDF is extremely bloated. That guy should be taught a lesson in OCRing. I would hold off and a superior version may pop up somewhere soon. :slight_smile:

I wish I hadn’t have given my copy of The Real Lincoln to an acquaintance to read over the summer. He sadly moved away and lost touch… took my copy of the book with him! Good thing that cannot happen with digital versions of the books.

Also, from the last time I recall someone asked this same type of question about good history books, someone recommended “The Story of Civilization” by Will & Ariel Durant.

I prefer PDF / audiobook form so I can read them from my computer for free. I guess western civilization more broadly but not really no I’m interested in it all I guess.

I will add ‘A Country Squire Goes to Washington’ by John T. Flynn it’s a biography of FDR not really a history book per se but since FDR is a historical figure I think this counts.

Well there are also EPUBs. Reflowable text, you can change the font size to whatever you like (so you won’t have to strain your eyes), you can read in whatever font you want, it is much smaller file size, etc etc.

Did you read Reassessing The Presidency? It is highly recommended by much of the Mises Institute staff.

Some great person made an EPUB of that book not too long ago… perhaps you might also find some other EPUBs there as well (I take requests):

Well if you are interested in Story of Civilization I may be able to stumble upon a copy. 9766 pages of history… That should hold you over for hmmm… about a decade. :slight_smile:

If it’s a recent book, say not more than 8-7 years, there is a 35% chance you can find it online in .pdf format for free. I kidd you not. You could almost be asking in general for history book recommendations, as chances are like I said you’ll be able to find 35% of them (the recent ones).

I find I have most success at ebookee but there are many sites like that, where you can look for books for free, mainly in pdf. Some may be found on Scribd. And you can just google. And also torrents. There is a gigantic history book torrent, it has 3GB worth of ebooks (it’s not .pdf, but it’s free). I know just a few of them, but I’ve downloaded two dozen from there to check out when time allows. (Also there is Russia Against Napoleon from Dominic Lieven in that torrent which is just incredible.)

Finally I have dozens of history pdf books, most of which I can recommend, part of my digital library. It’s a little bit bigger now than what you see in the link, but stil fundamentaly alike, somewhat East Europe-centered. If something like that sparks you interest say so and I can upload some of them for you to download. (I’d upload all of them in a package somewhere just for anyone to DL without being prompted, but unfortunately I’m currently on an UMTS line so I can’t have too much traffic.)

Oppenheimer’s The State is pretty good and I think qualifies.

A lot of these suggestions seem focued on American history. Does anyone have any suggestions - ignoring my previous request for epub or pdf versions - for great history books which cover, for example, the history of europe, the history of the roman empire… the history of asia… doesn’t have to be an overall look can cover one specific time period or be part of a broader overview… sorry for being so fussy I’m just looking to expand my knowledge in general and get a better idea about the history of the world.

While the actual historical content is scant and so heavily political that it can be unreadable at times, I know of no other book that conveys so clearly the full subjectivity of telling history.

It was created on February 12th if that is what you are asking. As usual, that PDF should only be used if you own the actaul book! Digital copies are just so much easier to read.
