Austrian Econ 101: Why not?

The only way to get Austrian Economics into mainstream universities is via the endowment process. That is, a bunch of rich AE businessmen need to go to their alma maters and say “Here is a check for $10 million dollars, it’s yours if you use some of it to create a chair of AE, ideally this fellow I have in mind.” I would love to one day approach Columbia U. with such an offer (and recommend Block as the chair as he is also a Columbia alum). Hopefully we have a few AE students who don’t aspire to become professors (IME most of them) and to become entrepreneurs.

As far as taking on your econ teachers, I wouldn’t back down. Perfect your arguments so that you can strike powerful points in the short time you’re allowed. That’s what I did, and even though the professors didn’t really give me much of a platform, I was able to arouse the interest of several individual students who would later approach me for a further explanation. Don’t give up because you don’t like being picked on… gotta be tough if you’re going down this path.

Good luck

max,

I was thinking the same thing. And something like that is already in the works. For example, there is the BB&T Professorship for the Study of Capitalism. It isn’t explicitly about teaching Austrian economics, but from what little experience I have with the grant it tends to go to Austrians. For example, Peter Boetkke at GMU recieved it and he’s obviously an Austrian.

This probably has a lot to with the fact that John Allison, the chairman of BB&T, is a big Ayn Rand fan (who was in turn a big Austrian fan).
