David Gordon is offering a course on Objectivism starting June 16th. After reading his review of Peikoff’s OPAR, I’m not optimistic that Rand will get a fair hearing. While Gordon’s review was interesting and provocative, it also revealed a surprising misunderstanding of Rand’s philosophy. The attitude he displayed in the review was also glib, sarcastic and disrespectful.
Why wasn’t an Objectivist philosopher, someone who really understands Rand’s philosophy, asked to give this course instead of a philosopher who disagrees with it as much as Gordon does? Would Austrians be sympathetic to a course on the Austrian theory of the business cycle given by Paul Krugman? Do you think Krugman would give it a fair and accurate presentation? Of course he wouldn’t.
Gordon has invited Objectivists to attend his course, but how many Objectivists do you think will be eager to pay $100 to listen to Gordon trash their philosophy? Not too many I’d wager. They’re not that altruistic! 
So his students will get a misleading view of Rand’s philosophy and come away from the course thinking that she’s a second-rate philosopher. Lovely. The Mises Institute has done itself proud!
