I’m assuming that many oppose background checks on purchasers before firearmss are sold, but should there be any background checks to prevent the mentally ill and recidivist criminals from purchasing firearms? Why or why not?
See, the important part is whether or not it is consensual. The gun shop owner could require a background if he wanted to.
I think that it is likely that security providers would coordinate a sort of ratings system for those who commit offenses (think of credit ratings). In order to incentivize gun sellers to refuse a sale, security providers and/or insurance agencies could pay money and/or offer admission to the “Association of Businesses for a Safer World” or something. Both consumers and security providers will benefit from known violent criminals having guns less often, thus justifying the outlay. It is impossible to ban gun ownership entirely, as they can be made with simple machines and chemicals. The other economic factors of a free society will greatly reduce violent crime as well.
there is a restatuant in my area that actually has a sign that says the reserve a right to serve only those that they wish.
gun shops can determine their own policy for selling guns.
i have seen an estimate that there are about 280 million guns in the us now. thats about 100 million less that the total number of people.
i expect if one wants to get a gun they can figure out how. same as they can get a tank of compressed flammable gas if they wanted to truly do harm.
