BIS - The Bank of Central Banks

I just stumbled upon a reference in a newspaper to a bank, BIS, said to be the bank of central banks, and of course had to wiki it.

Whats the deal with this bank? Has anyone heard of it before?

Interestingly BIS papers sometimes show some sympathy to Austrian ideas, which is remarkable given the proximity of the BIS to central bankers. See for example the 2006 paper Is Price Stability Enough by William White, the head of the BIS monetary and economic department. Last year’s BIS annual report also nodded in an Austrian direction to a certain extent.
