Books on Metaphysics and Epistemology

I’ve been looking for some (introductory) books on the two subjects, and it seems I’d be spending at least $30-40 for anything worthwhile. If I’m going to spend that much I want to make sure it’s the best on the subject. Suggestions? (Maybe even turn this thread into a reading list for the two.)

This website has information on epistemology and metaphysics.

Read Theory and History? Its main subject isn’t epistemology/metaphysics but it spends a few pages on the subject.

Anything more comprehensive is something I’d be interested in as well.

Thanks for those links, and I’ve already read Theory & History. I’m looking for books specifically on those two subjects, and that would go pretty in depth as an introductory book.

Have you checked out freedomainradio.com?

Molyneux has a couple of podcasts called intro to philosophy that are good.

Hey I don’t know what you mean by worthwhile, but old introductory philosophy books go cheap as chips on amazon.

Hamlyn’s ‘Modern Introductions’ books on knowledge and epistemology. They sell for just over $3. (plus another $3 postage) On amazon UK some second hand ones are going for a single penny. (I really don’t know how that is meant to work, the £2 postage must cover it). I have the theory of knowledge one(from a second hand book fair for a pound), can’t vouch for how it reads, I have not got round to it yet. But it looks like a perfectly good introduction.

I haven’t checked out freedommainradio.com, but I’m not that interested in podcasts. I want something in a physical form I can hold in my hands. I have Picard’s Syndrome.

Hamlyn’s books sell for $3 if they are used, and it depends which book. From what I can tell on Amazon (compared to Ebay), is that if I buy something used I can’t see what condition it is in, and I’d prefer new. Seldom do I buy a used book (if ever), and it has to be a very specific reason (book is rare, etc). “…can’t vouch for how it reads, I have not got round to it yet.” I would like to know for certain how good a book is.

I might end up getting Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction.
