So how is it that America is still capitalist after going through the Progressive Era? Or did America de-progress since then?
America, by Mises definition, is a hampered market economy, because it still has a functioning stock market. Though, I sometimes wonder what fascism would come under, seeing as it involves pseudoprivate ownership of the means of production under government directive.
Well you see, FDR changed everything, but them evil capitalists like Reagan ruined it by lowering the taxes. If FDR had been President for 70 years, the free market would have never ruined America.
Yeah, I think we found the ultimate refutation to the myth that America is free market capitalism.
I personally believe that US Americans are free market capitalism because the capitalism in the south africa, and the iraq and everywhere such as, they should be progressive to help the US and south africa and the iraq and the asian countries.

But we’re no where near free-market capitalism. America is more socialist since private property isn’t even respected, unless you have gun, but then the cops will shoot you.
America could perhaps be described as softcore fascist in it’s economy, especially in the most regulated sectors. Remember, fascist ideology is not incompatible with welfare statism.
America isn’t capitalist, it’s simply got a heavily distorted market with layers of government spending and socialized programs, indigent dysgenic experiments and a ton of plunder from the American empire.
So why do the anti-capitalists keep telling me that it is? [:D]
Because most people do not have a clear idea of what Capitalism actually is; not even accredited economists. Then, when you tell them what Capitalism actually is, they say, “Well, that might be true but is not very realistic” (I assume in reference to anarcho-capitalism, which is really just capitalism in its truest form) and they don’t realize that even if anarcho-capitalism wasn’t realistic (let’s give them the benefit of the doubt this time) it doesn’t mean that ideally the best way of bringing up the general standard of living is to move towards a more Capitalist system by shrinking government.
I was actually glad that Louis Carabini donated us each a copy of his book. I received one from Cato during the summer, and so I am going to give this new copy to my Poli. Sci. professor (although, not just to “educate” her; I will be looking for an internship and letter of reccomendation for graduate school, as well).

Probably because most people don’t know what you mean by “capitalist” or laissez-faire. The ideas most people have about ideology, politics and/or political economy seem to be very hazy, they tend to identify things by commonly associated visible features (i.e., capitalism means corporations with nominal private ownership; socialism means government professions of benevolence via redistribution).
The actual, concrete features of a given era or of what an abstract, intellectual type means when they talk about features of a society are simply outside of the conceptual realm most people occupy. It’s not really stupidity, or even willful ignorance, it’s a combination of epistemic limitations and what Nathaniel Branden called “social metaphysics”.
