Careers for Austrian Economists? ? ?

Hello,

I am reconsidering careers. Up to this point I’ve worked primarily in construction, but I’m now considering a career change. Having followed the Austrian school of economics for some time, and enjoying both reading and writing on the subject, I am wondering what sort of careers there are for people in the economic sphere? To be more specific:

  1. Is there a college which gives a useful degree in Austrian economics?
  2. If I did get a degree in economics, what kind of jobs are there? How do Austrian economists make a living and is there demand for that kind of work?
  3. If there is work for Austrian economists, what education / preparations would be best?

Personally, I enjoy active physical work outdoors and also accounting, but I love communicating with people and writing in particular. With these interests, obviously there are numerous career opportunities open to me, however, I am passionate about free market economics! I am seriously considering taking several years to advance my education and I would really appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Thank you. That was excellent. [:)]

Basically, economics as a profession was created for the benefit of interventionism, so no there isn’t a demand for Austrian Economists. That is as I thought. While there may not be professional positions for me as an Austrian economist I can still pursue it as my vocation. My passion for free market economics is, yes, to gain an understanding of economic theory, but more than that, to communicate the ideas of freedom in simple terms to fellow citizens. Thus, my personal goal is to follow Ron Paul rather than Rothbard or Hayek.

Now, I have discovered that some Austrian economists do make a living in the area they are passionate about, but they seem to be pretty few. Still, there are some investment analysts and investment authors who make recomendations or predictions based on the influence which a given economic action will have on a market.

An austrian accountant within a large corporation would be a killer combination.

What do you mean by ‘a killer combination’?

I know a little about tax accounting, but I’m not very familiar with other corporate accountants. What type of corporate accountant might be able to use Austrian economics in his work? Thanks.
