Personally, I think starting political arguments (whether your political persuasion is leftist, rightist, anarchist or National Socialist Green Libertarian Queers For Peace And Albino Midget Chicken Rights) makes you look like a jackass, unless you are at a venue specifically designed for them (and even then, you run a very strong risk of falling afoul of this:
Unless you’re a well versed public figure in a public venue (such as Ron Paul or Jeffrey Tucker) or feel like entering the mudpit, I really wouldn’t bother trying to convert people who’s minds are already made up. The future is with the apathetic Proles and open minded junior intelligentsia, not the YouTube yahoos (no pun intended) or the kind of humanoids who populate any website with a loosely moderated comments section.

While purple people tend to be found in greater numbers here, because the predominant political persuasion on Mises is one that is generally reached through independent decision rather than parental or media influence, I would still say there is quite a bit of close mindedness among us. Look, for example, at the common conflation of “troll” with “dissident” across political forums, for which ours is certainly no exception (Hayekians like iaminustacticus and Giles and Egoists/Hobbesians like Liberte, Vichy or Bloom have been at the receiving end of such treatment).

Good point. Most everyone here is a dissident in one form or another, so we should appreciate the dissidents who disagree with us!
Since this is my first forum, I’m curious where else the posters here participate in political/philosphical/economic discourse. Do you post anywhere else? Are there other places to visit online with an above-average amount of independent thinkers?
