Energy as a Medium

What would be your thoughts on using energy, in any form, as a means of exchange. With advances in sub-atomic science and other things i certainly dont understand, it would seem to me that eventually any commodity based exchange would become obsolete. This despite the costs mentioned in the article, as my question is purely theoretical and im assuming that eventually the process is simplified and made more efficient thus less costly. The point being, if we can change elements at will, it really throws a wrench in the whole scarcity thing. Once that point was achieved is it possible that the only scarce resource left to us would be energy? As it is never created or destroyed and only changes form, thus there is a fixed amount and could never be counterfited, do you think energy would make for a workable medium of exchange? Do you think that given the correct system, it would be a better medium of exhange than what we are using now?

It should be noted that it would be subject to a constant source of “inflation” via the sunlight always falling on the earth and our ability to store and use that. However once an element of scarcity has been removed from all commodities, given a certain amount of energy, and given the unique quality of energy to actually do work, does that create the possibility perhaps for a new economic system? I don’t know, this was simply a passing though after reading the mentioned article, i confess i have not spent much time dwelling on the subject and im sure it will be swiftly refuted by beautiful logic  thanks.

My initial thought is that the market will decide what the means of exchange will be, and it is crankish to try to dictate one good as money over another.

My secondary thought is that if we were going to guess what the market might choose, we might want to do so with respect to current technology, rather than dreaming up what might be in the future.

One historical quality of exchange media is that they are durable. Energy, once used, is dissipated into other forms.

Well… it was a hypothetical question. If scarcity was no longer a factor, hypothetically, what may be some alternatives? I’m not trying to dictate what currency would perform better im asking what you think the result of a situation like that may be. The whole idea is to consider the ramifications of a new technology. It was simply a question for “fun”.

If scarcity was no longer a factor why would we need a medium of exchange?

Energy accounting sounds good, and may very well be a stable medium in the future, but it is useless to talk about it now when there is no efficeint way to store it.
