Entrepreneurship: How to start?

Does anyone here has experience starting a business? I’d like to know how to start one up, possibly in Canada. What are the procedures? How long would it take?

Which sector/field?

I do, but there is really no great advice one can give. It is best to consult financial advisors, lawyers, and other related fields that you know you can trust. As a very very general guideline, I would not recommend starting a business that you have no real intimate knowledge of, it is usually best to work from bottom to top in a given field

I know how to legally start one here in the US but not in Canada. I am sure it is somewhat similar. But, you might want to be specific with your question. Do you want help starting a business in the sense of what paperwork must be filled out be be legal, or general tips on what is good to get a business going?

Personally, I’ve started a handyman business and purchased all necessary legal (tax) documents; bonds, liability insurance, business tax license, contractors license. I’ve been working as a station engineer for seven years and before I took the step to start my own company, I surveyed local competition rates and ratings. Then, find out if your pursuing a sole prop, llc, corp, and etc.

The business that i’d like to start is, of course, in agricultural (we all know how profitable/crucial this will be in the upcoming years). I was just thinking that I can purchase my own farmland, grow my own crops, and sell it locally. My other business venture would be starting an importer/exporter business, perhaps in rice or something. Any other suggestion?

Agriculture is a tough one. You’ll have to get make friends with competent lawyer to make sure you jump through all the right hoops…especially depending on what state/county you plan to operate in. I’m sure you’ve heard about all the farmer/grociers getting shut down and possibly hauled to jail, right? Check here and here just for a couple examples.

I have absolutely no knowledge of Canadian business law, as I’m sure is the case for most here. You might check with Mises Institute of Canada

Do you have any experience in either of these fields? Do you know anything about the local markets and economies that you wish to open them up in? Do you think there are hazards to your business venture if you are asking some life changing business advice from an online forum? Are you mixing political convictions with personal profit? If so that may be a bad thing.

If you wish to farm go to some A&M college or something, or get a job in agriculture before starting your own business.

Holy smokes, I didn’t even know there’s a mises institute of Canada!
