Tunisia was technically the country that sparked the revolution(s) and protests in various middle east countries. People usually point to Egypt as the spark, but Tunisia had their little uprising before that. Hence, they “liked freedom before it was cool,” it before it became a huge issue. And the glasses are just a symbol for “cool” I guess.
It’s a hipster meme. Basically, hipsters will be all into something (a band, for example) when it is “underground” and not that popular. Eventually, the thing becomes mainstream and the hipster is all like, “I liked so-and-so before it was cool.” It’s a street cred thing… or something.
