I recently took some old books that I no longer interested into my local used book store. A rather interesting place they deal in used and rare books. I turned in my used book, got a nice credit and out of habit I went to the political science section. There was nothing truly interesting in the section. A lot of Democrat books [ I live in California ], some Neoconservative books, nothing by Libertarianism or Austrians. So I went to the history section and found a wonderful book by Robert Conquest called “The Great Terror” which is a look at Stalinist Russia. Conquest is a great historian on Russian history under Marxist regimes. I then went to the philosophy section and was pleasantly surprised to find Leszek Kolakowski’s Main Currents of Marxism Volume II and III [ sadly I couldn’t find the first volume ] This book is perhaps the most comphrensive study on the history of Marxism and is highly recommended for those interested in understanding Marxism. However, I was then shocked…absolutely shocked to find a first edition, that is right a first edition of Joseph Schumpeter’s Capitalism, Socialism, Democracy. A first edition 1942! I couldn’t believe it! I almost slipped it under my shirt to make sure that no one would try and mug me to get it, but reminding myself that this is California, I concluded that such a work was probably gathering dust on someone else’s bookshelf and would continue to collect dust at this store. I bought it for $6.50, such a steal. This should be a lesson to all, check your local used book store. You never know what you will find. It could be the first edition to a classic work.
