I haven’t read Atlas Shrugged yet, but I enjoyed The Fountainhead a lot and thought it was very insightful, but I also never read fiction (besides Anthem, We The Living, and The Fountainhead nothing since high school English). I could say those books (especially The Fountainhead) molded me more into an individualist, philosophically.
I like to say that The Fountainhead probably makes a better novel, and seems to be more palatable to people who otherwise wouldn’t be receptive to Rand’s ideas, but Atlas Shrugged is much more epic in scope, as well as powerful to anyone who understands the message and how true it is. It also covers more ground philosophically speaking—even if Objectivism isn’t what mows your lawn, the book is perhaps more stimulating intellectually.

Agreed. The long rants in both are boring and repetitive, but the long rant in the Fountainhead is much shorter. Plus the Fountainhead has the more believable story.

Does Atlas Shrugged have great characters, and a very well constructed plot? Or is it all about the philosophy?
I am actually just reading Atlas Shrugged for the first time. About eight years ago, while living overseas and having mucho time on my hands, I read every other Ayn Rand Book. My absolute favorite is “Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal”.
But, to answer your question, I am about 25% through the book and I have to say at this point I prefer The Fountainhead. That could change, I guess.

Here is m 2 cents. I read Atlas shruged. I loved the plot. It took me 3 days to read it. SInce than I read more of Rands books. I still like Atlas the best.
I liked Atlas Shrugged better. I re-read it 6 months ago, and it seems amazingly apropos right now!
I love both. But I think I prefer the Fountainhead just because I really liked Roark.
The characters are all interesting and well developed, there’s even a Norwegian pirate.
