Living in southern California puts me close to the center of an immigration debate. I think both sides (as the media portrays them) are ridiculous. Some people want illegal immigrants to become active participants in the welfare state by receiving subsidized health care and education. Some want all illegals deported for fear of destroying American labor. Nobody seems to be asking why on Earth would so many people risk a dangerous trek through the desert just to reach a country where they have little to no prospects for economic security.
The question that’s always bothered me: “Why is Mexico so messed up that more and more people are risking life and limb just to leave?”
So if any of you have any good recommendations on literature, I’d love to hear them.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any links to any literature because I would also love a good read on the subject. I’m also a CA native here in San Jose.
The reason they come here is because the opportunity of birth right for their children, free education, and free health care. Who wouldn’t risk their life for that? Plus, sending dollars back to their home improves the quality of life for their families back home.
If you want to tackle immigration, you don’t need a Real ID card or massive fencing around our country. We need to take away the incentives that created the problem we have here today.
Now, this is where I can use guidance. Are corporations in bed with government to use this labor to dodge paying additional capital to citizens or is this the market forces saying that Union and Health care expenses have poisoned the market place and this is the fix?
We should get rid of the incentives but before our country addresses immigration we need to take care of our monetary policy.
