Google is considering a deal with Verizon to allow corporations to control which websites load quickly and easily and dump everyone else onto an Internet slow-lane.
Is this bad capitalism or state capitalism? Because google’s decision is purely on their behalf, and does not involve the state.
If I’m correct, some sites that have paid to have faster access will on Verizon, and those sites will be faster (by how much is uncertain) compared to others. If you don’t use Verizon internet, it will not matter. Google’s search engine will be one of those sites. The FCC is also apparently not getting involved. According to some people, this would “end the internet”. What about other service providers? How would this “end the internet”? Is there something I’m missing? Just sounds like some deal to give faster connections to sites that pay more. What’s “slow” on the internet in coming years?
I haven’t read through that article yet but I read about this a couple days ago. Basically from what I read the creator pays the service provider to speed up his website. The article I read mentioned that as a way to offset the costs it will be passed onto consumers which was something that was controversial about it. If consumers feel it is unjust there are other providers.
Sounds to me like it’s time to switch to Yahoo.
I heard both google and verizon denied ever talking about that, and the NYTimes is wrong.

Must be part of the net neutrality hype
Doesn’t Gamespy and Rapidshare do the same thing? They make me pay for faster access to their files, or access it free on the slow lane.
Not once in the article did it mention that agreement so important to this web site. The agreement is of course the right to private property. The article did not mention who owns the transmission lines, switches and what not. Instead it talked about some Internet as we know it. The internet as we know it is just older than a teenager.
Verizon owns the property. Google is trying to position itself to deal with the owners of the transmission systems allocating their property in ways they see fit.
This “Net Neutrality” solution is a shot at private property rights. Of course private property is a much more effective and efficient means to determine how to use property than through government fiat.
My advice on handling this is easy:
Allow Google to buy Verizion or Verizion to buy Google or any other mergers or purchases without interference. Then we, the internet consuming public, will get the best internet services and using the most available bandwidth at the cheapest price.
The author complains about transmission operators running roughshod over the lowly government people. Well hells bells, If the government did not regulate the world then it would not matter who the transmission operators ran roughshod over.

I don’t know if it’s for damage control or if they could turn the law into their favor.
