Government Orders Youtube to Censor Protest Videos

Very disturbing when our government is ordering protest videos be censored. But then again, our government seems to be doing criminal activity right out in the open now. Right in front of everyone’s eyes. I guess it makes it easier for people to ignore when its right in your face. Its more intimidating.

Here’s to hoping this will only dilute YouTube’s (and, by extension, Google’s) market share.

Why? Youtube risks getting pulled alltogether if they don’t comply with the laws of the countries they’re in.

Is there a legal basis for any/all of these “requests”?

People will prefer to go to sites which don’t censor the protest videos. Maybe those sites will get pulled, but not before the videos spread to other sites. Defeating the internet is more difficult than Hercules defeating the Hydra.

Here’s a rant about the Google compliance/incompliance with government requests from a year ago…

Because you want to reward those distributers who are bold enough to stand up to this type of thing.

Right, what Marko said.

I think a more prudent question is: what negative consequences will they suffer if they don’t comply. Do you know this?

The government interprets it’s own laws, so it doesn’t matter what the law is.

You’re right about that, Nielsio. I don’t know what the consequences are for non-compliance - do you?

My point is, if you’re always complying with government “requests”, how will there ever be any resistance? To quote my avatar, at some point we must say “The line must be drawn here! This far, no farther!”

Sure.

But let’s refrain from condemning Google and it’s market-share before we know what their costs of noncompliance are. They can be very hidden.

this is why we need to start using Vimeo.com

the more major video sites there are, the harder it becomes for government to shut them all down. And if they do, the more obvious their tyranny becomes.

I’m uploading all my new stuff to Youtube and Vimeo.
