Been wanting to read a bit on Mencken, what would be considered his magnum opus?
I prefer "Notes on Democracy", but I’ve only read that and a few essays in one of my greek philosophy classes (they were all from “Prejudices” (which would probably be his magnum opus; it’s 6 volumes, i think) the essays i read were crtiques of music and stuff. As an introductory, def NoD.
Mencken is the shit. I really wish people could still think lke him, but we’ve got the PC police.
I thought his magnus opus was “The American Language”.
There is the “A Mencken Chrestomathy”, which is his selection of his best works.
Library of America has reprinted his “Prejudices” in 2 volumes.
I haven’t read a lot of Mencken, but always enjoyed his “Devil’s Dictionary”. Dover Books published it, but it may be out of print.
Oh, there is a Second Chrestomathy. It was planned by Mencken, but unfinished when he had a stroke, and was later put together from what was planned. So there is that as well.
