No, that is not a typo. I was prompted to write this post because an Indian film company has had a lawsuit levied against it (by Warner Bros, not by J. K. Rowling) because it is producing a film with the title Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors. It is not my intent to delve into the merits of the lawsuit but I will make three points about it. 1. As the article (below) points out, Hari is a very common name in , like John in the . 2. We do not yet know the plot of the film. and 3. One could just as easily claim this is a rip off of a Shakespeare play.
Now into the meat of my point: I would never have even heard of this movie had it not been for this lawsuit. If I someday see this film it will probably be because I and others outside learned about it via this lawsuit. A similar phenomenon happened with the J. K. Rowling novels themselves. The more that anti-Pagan bigots tried to keep these novels out of the hands of young people the more people of all ages learned of the books’ existence and the popularity of the novels skyrocketed in no small part because of these attempts at censorship. I often wonder if people deliberately seek out lawsuits for the sake of publicity. I sometimes like Bollywood films and will see how the reviews are for this one. I might watch it if the reviews are good enough. Thank you Warner Brothers for bringing this film to my attention!
