Homeschooling in Alabama

We just moved to Alabama from Mississippi. Does anyone know what the state “requires” for home schoolers in Alabama? A search on the state’s department of education website returned no results for “homeschool” or “home school.”

My wife has read that we have to be part of a “church umbrella school” in order to be in compliance. She stated that these umbrella schools charge up to $300 per family or even $150 per child. I am not into extortion be it from a church or the state. It would also seem discriminatory to atheists for the state to require this.

Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately, you are stuck either with the “Church” option or you must hire a state certified private tutor.

I wish I had something better to tell you, but you are essentially screwed. But if you must pay tribute, better to a damn church than the damn government.
