I post sometimes on a predominantly liberal forum and we were talking about balancing the budget and how taxes needed to go up and I said “I could never support that.” So this guy posts this:
JB, I have a very special article I’d like you to read.
Colorado springs is turning off tens of thousands of street lights, firing police officers and firefighters, getting rid of a police helicopter, cutting back on water for their parks, eliminating flowers and fertilizer from their budget, and getting rid of state employees. All for the sake of keeping taxes low.
If you don’t pay your taxes, you’re gonna live in a shithole.
So I said:
I’d rather live in a shithole than have my money stolen from me.
Not to mention the fact that many of these services can be provided by the market. Except for the police and the firefighters. But then who says they need so many police and firemen? I think they know what’s best for them.
Now whether or not you agree with either his post or my reply, this just goes to show how differently two people with two different worldviews can see the same situation. He sees this as evidence that the government provides so many wonderful things that you’d have to be a fool to disagree. I see it as evidence that not everyone wants all these wonderful things. Some people would rather just keep their money.
