When drugs were legal, there were far fewer addicts then now. The “war on drugs” made them very profitable for gangsters to sell. Remember Prohibition? It’s the same, only on a far larger scale. So instead of selling them in drugstores to adults, they’re sold in schools to children. All thanks to “the big government”.

It sounds like you’re making two assumptions.

Your first assumption is that the things you listed are problems. I’ll address prostitution specifically. Is prostitution a problem? It involves one adult trading money for services from another adult. It’s no different than if I go to a dentist. Both service providers need professional standards to avoid spreading disease. Consumers tend to seek out those with such standards, when they have a choice.

I think prostitution is morally good. But this is just my opinion. Whereas “F=ma” is a law that can be demonstrated in a laboratory, the statement “prostitution is morally good” is only valid relative to certain sets of moral axioms. Prostitution may be good or bad. There is no way of proving it. Why do you think it’s bad?

Perhaps occurrences of prostitution damage your religious beliefs, or your feelings. So it’s existence is causing you mental harm. If the act harms others, maybe it should be a crime. On the other hand, I find outlawing it to be repugnant and harmful to my beliefs.

Your second assumption is that a strong government could solve, these “problems”. I’m not sure about trade in human beings, but the other things you mentioned are everywhere in USA even though we have the most expensive government in the world (with $100 trillion in debt) and more people incarcerated than any other country in the world. Are you suggesting that our government simply isn’t strong enough? Maybe $1 quadrillion in debt and 10% of the population in jail be enough to solve the “problems”? I doubt it.

Property rights. It’s up to the owner. Do you (or your economist friends) seirously think that Disneyland would allow naked people in its parks?

But we cannot rely upon old books in the future, at least not in some subjects. Someone will have to write new books.

As long as there is profit in books, that is to say, consumers demand them, then someone will write.

The issue with the school books, is that it is a monopolistic racket. If the books could be printed in softcover, or downloaded as PDF, students could save a lot of money. Maybe people outside of school would buy the books to educate themselves or to supplement their education (maybe the graduated 20 years ago and want to be brought up to date).

No one is saying the books should be free. We’re saying that the student is trapped. They have to buy that book, and the educators know that, which is why the books are so insanely expensive.

Anyways, I am currently realizing that problem, as I am taking college classes in high school. I had to get 3 different math textbooks, and each one costs over $100. When I plan to go to college, this means over $600 per year. They talk about cutting costs for college, why don’t they start by stoping the monopoly you describe?

Think about what would happen if people cracked down even further on child porn? It becomes even more expensive (because there is a premium for the risk of getting in trouble with the law) and it becomes scarcer, so it also becomes more expensive, and those high profits attract the sort of criminal people who would kidnap kids and force them to perform in child porn and maybe even hurt them.

To be more precise, Ron Paul is an anarchist at heart, who plays a constitutional minarchist on TV.

You got that too? I was WAY too active in his campaign, and met with him person to person a number of times. I asked him what his thoughts were on anarcho capitalism, he said it would be a great idea to strive for. The man is really well read, and incredibly intelligent. I’m sure he has followed the non-aggression principle to its end. Regardless, he opened my eyes to the evils of the state, and for that, I have a ton of respect for him.

They have a right to sell their product. They own their product. But they cannot own what is in your mind, or what you do with your property. The limits of their ownership starts with their property, and ends with their property. Your property is yours to do with as you please.
