Hypothesis: time preference and incentives

humans naturally have a high time-preference (known as hyperbolic discounting) due to our adaptation to an environment with an extremely uncertain future (leopards in the trees!). The economic systems that will be most successful for humans are successful mostly because they are the systems that naturally offset this by incentivizing a low time-preference. this long term planning naturally leads to more efficient allocation of resources, since we live in a much less risky environment now (life expectancy 75 years).

It occurs to me that other efficient social systems follow this exact pattern. Compensating for our cognitive bias and thus allowing people to function more rationally without requiring any deep thought or consideration byt he participants.
