My country’s currency collapsed just 2 months ago. It has lost, who knows, maybe 60-70% since the beginning of the year.
Early this year I had converted all my savings from this currency and into gold, stored at James Turk’s company. Needless to say, I saved myself, or, gold saved me.
I’ve been interviewed by a journalist from New York, we talked about why I turned to gold. He’s going to be interviewing our prime minister also! When he told me that, I asked him to deliver a message to him “GO TO THE GOLD STANDARD!”. He promised me he would do that.
Our currency is doomed, dead, toast, … nobody trusts it, and it’s nowhere traded except on our little island. Even our prime minister has admitted we might need a new currency. Everyone agree we need a new currency! And now is our chance to change our monetary policy, now is our chance to adopt a gold standard!
But the answer people always come up with is “dollars, euros, join the EU, the norwegian crown!” or something like that. People don’t realize that those currencies are all fiat.
The question is, how can I relay that answer to people, mainly politicians? I don’t of many people that agree with me, so I guess I’m pretty much a lone fighter on this little island.
Hey, so you are from Iceland? Did that loan from Russia for you people that was in the news for a while go through in the end? Did it change perception of Russia in Iceland a little bit? Do you like them more than the Brits now?
A bit off topic, but I figured I`d sieze the opportunity - there not being that that many Icelanders hopping about.
The fact that you’ve been interviewed by a journalist who will also talk to your prime minister is a great start. That’s going to stir at least some attention towards your position. If any kind of Icelandic news outlet decides to interview you, talk about the following:
After the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic, they introduced a new currency, the Reichsmark. While de iure being a currency backed by gold, de facto it was completely fiat. It only lasted 24 years due to its devaluation for political purposes (mainly military buildup and war). Thus, even if your government decides to introduce a new fiat currency, it’ll be subjected to the same political whims that caused your former currency to collapse - see Weimar Republic.
Talk about the steady devaluation of the dollar since Roosevelt’s gold confiscation in the 1930s, and its incredible decline since Nixon’s abolishment of Bretton Woods in the 1970s. Show how going off the gold standard made it possible for the US to become the despised imperial warmonger it is today, and how a gold standard would’ve disciplined its government, thus preventing a lot of violence and bloodshed.
Appeal to emotion - people linger after monetary security right now, right? Describe how a gold standard would secure their savings and allow them to retire with a non-devaluated savings account. Use the example of the United States from 1800-1900.
It would be absolutely incredible to see a nation on this earth introduce a gold standard and outperform all the global megastates such as the US or the EU. Imagine that.
My own laziness saved me from a financial setback.
I was all ready to invest in Icelandic currency this summer when I saw the returns above the dollar. But I decided more research needed to be done. Then I blew off my research so I decided I was going to “take a chance” and then I blew off risk taking as well.
For one incident laziness both jeopardized me and saved me.
