Today in my “Rah-Rah [School Name Here] Is GREAT!” class, we were discussing The Tipping Point and it’s chapter on the “Broken Window” Theory, that why New York crime fell in the 90s was because of Kelling and the theory that if people see a broken window, the passerbys will conclude, if the window is left as is, no one is in charge and will create anarchy.
I agreed with this, to an extent, but I brought the point up that this, and Kelling’s crackdown on people not paying the fare on the subway, had this as a superficial reason, but the underlying motivator was the respect of property rights.
I had the class up until there, but then when the Administrative Assistant [teacher] asked what others thought, one person brought up public property and I blanked. I stated of how the is no group, that yes, technically you are destroying your own property, but there is still the users.
I know realize, and I should have brought it up then, I could have angled, yeah- but if EVERYONE owns it, you are defacing theirs as well, etc- course you can’t really divide up his example of a fire truck, but I should have angled that way.
What would you guys/girls have done differently. Although I am in the south, there are a lot of students from more northern/Democrat leanings, with some healthy socialism thrown in for good measure.
