I am going to jail for 2 - 5 days next month. I want to bring a book that will get me through a few days and let me learn some new stuff while doing my time. I was thinking Rothbard, maybe MES… Suggestions?
Also, I need to do some community service and wanted to do something that will support the free market, yet won’t @#$% off the judge at my trial. Any ideas?

If you have 2-5 days where you can do nothing, bring Man, Economy, and State (don’t forget Power and Market), Mystery of Banking, a book by Rothbard on the history of Economic thought, Mises’ Socialism, Eragon, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc. Read through them carefully, ponder, and meditate.
For community service, I recommend the Humane Society (if you can).

I’d personally recommend The Myster of Banking, What has the Government Done to Our Money and The Case for the 100% Gold Dollar, Man, Economy, and State (with Power and Market), For a New Liberty, and Education, Free and Compulsory.
As for non-Rothbard books? Human Action, The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve, Privatization of Roads and Highways, The Myth of National Defense, Antitrust and Monopoly: Anatomy of a Policy Failure, and Antitrust The Case for Repeal.
“The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve” isn’t exactly an economics book, but it does cover the workings of the Federal Reserve and some of the other effects it has on society that aren’t always covered by Austrian economists…it also covers the creation of the Fed.
Does it have a Library like Shawshank Redemption? lol
Possibly try convert all the guys there on drug charges… and basically every other victimless crime, tax dodgers, insider traders etc..

Dude, forget all the books that everyone has recommended above. They’re not what you should be reading while in jail.
What you need to do is take Walter Block’s Defending the Undefendable with you. He basically defends most of the people who are currently in jail (especially for victimless crimes)!
Buy 5-6 extra copies to hand out to other inmates, so they can understand they aren’t bad people for smoking pot.

Make it from “Sally” or someone… just getting your own package, sent by you… for whatever reason, might elevate the guards / warden stopping you from getting it.

How often will you be able to read? I would suggest George Reisman’s book “Capitalism”, if you have a lot of time.

Well, since voting presumes a state, and the state is a criminal enterprise, seems to me that keeping convicted criminals from voting is just a form of protectionism.
I would like to see a “prisoner body government” set up in prison, a la student body governments in schools. [:D]
