Intellectual Property

I see and can appreciate most of the arguments against patent/trademarks… but what about novels and essays… and other art?

For instance, if I were to live in a Libertarian society with no intellectual property, wrote a book, and someone stole it from me by changing the name and publishing it how is that moral?

You seem to confuse theft with Imaginary Property (IP). If someone stole your book (physical book, not a pattern), you have all the rights to seek restitution from a criminal. However, if the book was left on a bench..then it’s just fockin stupid and now laws would defend you from stupidity. Just saying. So your situation is not clear.

There were countless threads about IP, why not read them first or post in them? Anyway, you either keep your things in the head or you don’t.

It’s not my fault if you can’t keep or successfully distribute a secret.

I’m still being convinced that IP laws aren’t good. But for the reason you listed, I believe that would be illegal as fraud because they’re taking your work. Don’t quote me on that, though. I still can’t get over someone selling an author’s book (under the true author’s name) without his or her consent. There would be no royalties or anything. That’s what I can’t agree with at all, especially since I write fiction a lot.

Would this mean widely-syndicated columnists like Charles Krauthammer wouldn’t have a choice of which newspapers printed their columns without payment?

Before you read anything else, read these:

The economic principles of intellectual property and the fallacies of intellectual communism

The ultimate justification for natural and intellectual property

It’s not my fault if you can’t keep or successfully distribute a secret.

Also, women who don’t want to get raped shouldn’t be so attractive.

Rape is using violence/threat (no consent to use person’s body, to be specific). Copying a pattern doesn’t involve any of this. I don’t force the author to give away his physical book or pattern. Well, unless someone holds a gun to your head and asks how the main protagonist ended up in your yet unwritten book. But that’s another story.

By the way, OP’s situation is quite arbitrary, so it’s hard to give a sufficient answer.

That is besides the point.

But your example was beside the point.

But your example was beside the point.

The point was, since you are unable to grasp it, that responding “tough shit” to someone seeking the means for society to produce goods is a neanderthal response.

Actually, a neanderthal would not be able to respond, because it is unlikely he would be familiar with the english language.

Society has produced many goods just fine without intellectual monopoly. Just ask any neanderthal.

Here we go again. Have you seen the video “Copying is Not Theft”?

I’d challenge more Pro IP people to a debate at debate.org, but they’d have to wait behind 2 communists and a keynesian. Gotta prioritize!
