Interesting article about future of internet with interesing comments. I think it could use some free market economists in comment section because it seems most of people there want force people to use ipv6 instead of ipv4 by government mandate citing free market failure to do as they wish as the reason. Of course standard apocalyptic fear mongering ensues to make you feel bad for not agreeing with them. I lose all hope for future when reading such opinions by otherwise very intelligent people.

I found this to be especially interesting, because it seems true at face value. Of course it does not logically follow from that that ipv6 should be imposed. I wonder what kind of unintended consequences this will have. Some revenue lost for phone producers is obvious one. Second one is obliterated innovation on power connectors technology (its like making Lenovo power connector standard thus banning Mac magnetic power connectors into oblivion). Any others?
The industry wants a change to to ipv6. It will happen even without government mandate. But before it would happen anyways, gov’t will probably mandate it.
I suppose this is a co-ordination or even “public goods” problem that the government solves. Not to say that it wouldnt’ be solved by some other agency or group if ther wasn’t government.

This is coordination problem only when you assume there is a problem at all. Who knows if we will use ipv6 in the future? Maybe there will emerge new standard that will be backwards compatible? Or something entirely different that will entice current ipv4 users to update ASAP? I don’t see how this can be public good problem because no part of network is public “property”. ipv4 adresses are private property as well. Is it coordination problem when someone does not want to do as others please (migrate to ipv6 in this case)? Why should I care? I have my ip. Mises.org works for me and that all I care about Those that want to have their own adress, but there is no more left would just have to buy it from someone else. To ignorant me ipv6 seems like just elegant solution to ipv4 nat. Maybe there is just no demand for it. Maybe there is but cost of implementation compared to benefits is too high. Personally I see no need for ipv6 - ipv4 and nat works for me.
