According to https://forum.freecapitalists.org/chat/, the Mises IRC channel is on Freenode. It is of my best professional (and biased) opinion that Freenode is not the best server for the LvMI to use. My reasoning is as follows:
Freenode is a frequent attack of DDoS attacks, and occasionally gets netsplits.
Freenode does not allow competition for which web:irc clients may access its server. Specifically, Mibbit is blocked. This means that those who primarily use Mibbit as their IRC client can not access the mises channel.
2a) I am biased on this, since I am an IRC OP for irc.mibbit.net, and I use Mibbit as my primary client. When they decided to block Mibbit, I was part of the group trying to get the decision reversed. We followed every order (they were all reasonable), but they just kept tacking on new ones. Ultimately, I believe that Freenode just doesn’t want anybody to have the ability to profit off of their IRC server, and will restrict choice to do so.
2b) They do have a web:irc client of their own, but it only connects to Freenode (whereas Mibbit can connect to multiple servers). Furthermore, the settings are not possible to change.
Lack of SSL. Security vulnerabilities are more likely on Freenode compared to other servers, where SSL is usually built in.
Because of these reasons, and some unlisted, I suggest moving the IRC channel off of Freenode. I am biased, and think it should be moved to irc.mibbit.net (since it is a general server in and of itself). But almost any other server would be an improvement. Thoughts from other users (including those in mises)
It is rather inconvenient for me to join another network when one already suffices. Freenode is a natural home for mises simply because there are so many people that are in promixate connection to hackerdom/geek subculture and libertarianism as well.
Can I request this be moved to the ‘Help and Support’ forum now that I finally see it exists with my sickened tired eyes. (I did not see it when my eyes were fully awake and I was not sick.)
