Is Monsanto evil ?

whats wrong with genetically modified crops ?

I have seen a lot of backlash against this company over it seeds

The problem is not exclusively with modification. The problem is with polluting other people’s property, and with using the law to control other people’s property.

I agree with Nielso’s point about IP, indeed many companies now “own” seed varieties that have been used by others in the developing world for millenia for instance. With GM crops, I feel the problem is really more technological; in the sense that we are now better informed about the adverse effects of GM crops than we were in the past, and this is largely as a result of microbiology making some advances regarding the understanding of how genes affect properties of organisms. The main point learned, is that the sequencing and ordering of DNA may be just as important if not more, than what genes are within a certain chromosome, making splicing and matching here and there a more risky option. There is also risk of fall out and spread, of these genes too I think, though I’m not an expert on this.

Undoutably, most who are concerned about this will undoubtably favour regulation, though I think an actual consistent defence of property rights and repeal of IP, as well as any governmental support for these companies would be the best solution. Don’t see it happennng until at least a sovereign default though.
