Hello all,
I just moved to NYC a month ago. Does anyone know of any good bookstores for Austrian economics? The 3 Barnes and Nobles I visted seemed Lacking, all I could find was Hazlitt, maybe two books by Hayek, and 2 books by Thomas Woods. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Unfortunately, the last haven for literary freedom works was Laissez Faire Books in the Village, but that closed in 2007. As far as I know, and correctly assume based on the socialist-welfare demographic in the city, there is nothing else. Ive heard of a few “indie” bookstores but of course they tend to cater to Social alarmist and green movers. Capitalism is naughty word in this city, so any thing catering to it is not usually in high demand.
I get my books from Mises or Amazon.
If you find anything let me know.
You don’t have to tell me twice about free market being a bad word in this city. I could go on about my frustrations with people here, just on me trying to avoid arguments to boot. Seriously all I have to say is the phrase “i don’t find politics important” and i get branded as bad, much less a phrase “people worshiping politicians scaes me” those two phrases I use fairly frequently and I get ostricized, and that is only the tip of the iceberg. I did notice earlier this week a commie book store which made giggle, I think it had a sign that said somethig to the effect of “Now that the fake communism has failed let the real communism take over”. Anyway I could rant and rave for pages on end about New York people. , thanks for answering I’ll let you know if I find anything.
Are there any groups or anything friendly to our kind over here?
I haven’t really looked for groups honestly, since I’m not in their full time yet. I’m sure a their may be a Campaign for Liberty meeting or something in the future. I guess you just have to pay attention to a bunch of different organizations. Obviously tiresome.
Side note- I did a small social experiment at my school the other day.(Im a CUNY kid) I wore my brother’s RepubliCAN shirt to class. NO one sat near me or talked to me. I always have people near me since I actually participate in class and wasn’t raised in the awful NY public schools. (These kids don’t even know the metric system.) I got eyed up like an alien. Very funny, honestly surprised I didn’t get some slander thrown at me. They have “What would Al Gore do” tote bags in the bookstore also. Clearly a non agenda based system.
Well I don’t see why you would expect anyone to be allright with you wearing a Republican shirt- the past 8 years have left a stain which can’t be removed. Unfortunately very few in NYC seem to understand that Obama is no different. Unlike you, I was raised in awful NY public schools- but as bad as they are and as bad as the kids from there come out- I’ve had a much easier time convincing them to the free-market side than anyone else. I suppose its because they already have a large distrust of government authority from the start.
Which CUNY do you go to?(I went to Hunter, where people were proud to wear the “socialist” label).
Baruch (@ BMCC on permit this semester) I like the school, nice view of the Hudson and Hoboken from my classes. It could use some retooling. Id pay extra to not have gaps around all the waterfront windows in the winter My professors are nice and none have yet to make their politics obvious like my old school in Jersey. It my business classes, most of those who participate actually surprise me. You very right on the distrust for govt. They don’t put all the blame on capitalism and greed as I expected. (these are also the older kids as the youngins don’t really speak up- im 23) We may talk about business cycle tomorrow, so we’ll see how that goes.[:D]
