What do you think libertarians are going to be doing in 10 years? Ron Paul has no chance to win anything. The government isnt going to fall apart even though my libertarian friends keep telling me it. I want freedom for ht epeople and BY the people. You hear that, by people living free. That means not with big business ruling everyone’s lives and we all know that business doesn;'t protect us. We need to help out the world that is alive around us and that isnt a god named capitalism.
Funny thing about what you said is that except for the USA, China and Britian, the rest of the world, 4.5 billion people, are on average more free economically than in the past. Don’t look at the US Government and say all is lost. There are real “green shoots” of liberty all over the place. Look at the opposition to the socialist Obamacare. There is also almost no belief in the population that anything the Federal Government is doing will help the nation economically. How many people really believe that there is 9.7% unemployement?
We had a retirement benefits meeting at the office and one person said Social Security would still be helping with retirement and the response was laughter.
If you want true liberty then join the Free State Project and move to New Hampshire. If you want tyranny then move to Washington DC.

Hard to say. Depends what you mean by libertarian. I believe there will be more “libertarian sway” over the next ten years. I could forsee tax revolts and people rebelling against aspects of the government.
He’s won his seat in the house. I think he’s also won other things. The republican party is cozying up to libertarian ideas these days. (But not necessarily to him) He did win that CPAC vote thing.

I still don’t understand what this statement means. If my freedom is subject to limitations by other people, isn’t that just tyranny of the masses? I’d prefer personal freedom for everyone, rather than the poetic “for the people by the people” stuff. It stinks of too much collectivism for my liking. So long as your freedom stems from other people, you are not free.
I think you might be confusing corporatism with capitalism. There is a very clear distinction. Corporatism is about government and the wealthy working together to benefit each other. The government has a monpoly on coercion, and the wealthy can use this. Capitalism is about capital accumulation and rising standards of living, brought about by voluntary market activity.
The government may not collapse but it certainly is going to hell fast, look at the debt figures and unfunded liabilities for social security which are astounding, the fact that if the economy ever “improves” and spending and investment by the banks ever gets going again there’s going to be epic inflation, the massive political discontent of which the tea parties are only the froth on top of the pot, the fact that Obama’s approval ratings have been progressively tanking since he took office (making people fed up with “left” and "right), and the explosive growth that libertarianism has been making in the last few years.
Libertarians will continue to spread their ideology, and if current trends continue it is quite likely that they will have a good deal of success.

Definitely, man. I was so happy when he won CPAC. Plus he came to my university, and there were hundreds and hundreds of people skipping class to see him even though he was like two hours late from the airport.
It may sound dumb, but I think Hollywood would help in a big way if there were more movies and television shows that portrayed libertarian ideas more often. Although it’s not real, certain shows get people to research more about specific ideologies they might not have cared about before. I know Sons of Anarchy helped in getting me interested in more libertarian ideas. I just watched it and enjoyed how all of the characters took care of each other without help from the police and government and everything. Cheesy, but whatever’ll help get people involved in the movement is a plus.

In socialized medicine, you’re always doing one of two things. You’re either ripping off your neighbor, or you’re getting ripped off by your neighbor. Everyone’s getting the same services, yet everyone is paying a different amount. Cooperation is just a friendly term for being obedient to a tyrannical government. Remember when the SS cooperated? Remember when the KGB cooperated? In capitalism, every single exchange is agreed upon. Every participant in the capital negotiation agrees that the trade-off, whether it be money-for-goods/services or anything other combination, is equal because nobody will make a trade if they are receiving less than they are giving.

Ron Paul has already won. Don’t you understand? Ron Paul has been fighting for liberty for over four decades. That you only heard of him in 2008 doesn’t mean that’s when he began existing. The “unwashed masses” are actually talking about the Fed, about inflation and about sound money. They’re talking about property rights, and ending wars of aggression and imperial foreign policy. Unlike the 90’s, the powers that be have not managed to confine the discussion to the Montana Freemen and Idaho militia wingnuts. This has broken into the mainstream and that is Ron Paul’s power.
Assuming there was a chance for RP to win in 2012 (and there isn’t), I would rather not see him become Prez because TPTB would simply pull a JFK on him. He’s far more useful to the cause of liberty alive than dead.
Edited to add: Yes, you’re right, government oppressors will certainly not cease existing in some form. However, particular governments are historically short-lived and the United States government has been exceptionally long-lived by historical standards. It is time for it to die and die it will, likely to be replaced by something even more destructive and tyrannical than what went before.
As for big business ruling people’s lives, what is the government but an alliance of big business interests to control imports, reduce competition, enforce lawful cartels, and “create overseas markets”, aka colonialism (ramming the products of big Western farms and factories down the throats of foreign peoples who were producing for themselves at lower prices and better quality prior to colonization)? Big government is big business’ best friend.
As for “capitalism”, people like to attack the word because it is poetically associated with the 19th-century Robber Barons who were, supposedly, big free-market buffs and fans of open market competition. But capitalism is really two big ideas: 1) self-ownership (and, by extension, property rights) 2) voluntary exchange. Please tell me how self-ownership and voluntary exchange harm people. Please explain how these ideas make the rich richer and the poor poorer. I would love to hear your explanation.
