Everyone raves about this show, but I can’t help but be annoyed by it as it is one cliche after another. It portrays the evils of advertising, capitalism, men, cigarettes, and alcohol. Boring. Anyone seen anything ripping this show to shreds?

Well, Mad Men centers around an advertising guy or an ad man. He works for cigarette company Lucky Strike in the first episode and then in the second episode the show moves on to aerosol cans in the form of Gilette deodorant. Every man acts like a sex-crazed/starved animal towards every woman in the office. There’s one scene where one of the wives’ kids comes out with a plastic bag over her head although it’s a fairly large plastic bag. The mother doesn’t say anything to the child about it. Everybody is chain smoking and drinking all day in the office. There’s one scene where the new girl at the office is being shown around and the woman showing her the office pulls out a new typewriter and says something like, “Don’t be intimidated the men who designed made it easy for a woman to use.” It just goes on and on.
You haven’t given any examples of “It portrays the evils of advertising, capitalism, men, cigarettes, and alcohol.” Unless being-sex-crazed is evil. I’m sepcifically looking for examples of the evils of advertising and capitalism.
Actually I did. He’s an advertisor selling cigarettes and various other things that needed to be regulated as the story goes. I’d rather you not respond if you don’t have any clue about the show at all.
I had the exact opposite reaction. To me, Mad Men contrasts the pussification of current society caused by the modern nanny state.
When I watch the show, I don’t think “UGH! How did people live back then?!” I think “I wish I could have lived back then.” (or at least adopt some of their practices.)
Simply saying that “the firm does work for a cigarette company = implying that advertising is evil” isn’t enough. Have you the entire series or are you basing your criticism on the first two episodes?

Nowadays, you would be sued for saying every other sentense in that show. Child protection services would have been called for when Sally took the train by herself to Don’s office.
