Maximum Occupancy (Fire Marshall) Laws

Anyone ever run across any economic analysis of the subject?

A lot of businesses have fined or shut down because of those laws. The laws are also great for extorting businesses.

At my sweet sixteen party my daddy spent all this money on caterers and a DJ, and all my friends were there and having a great time. But then my old lady neighbor called the fire marshal on us and he shut us down because there were too many people in the building and it was a fire hazard.

Like what the F? That totally ruined what was supposed to be the best day of my life. Just as Brad was getting to second base with me we have to leave. It was so embarrassing, especially because Jessica says her daddy is throwing her an even wilder sweet sixteen party next month.

I’ll just have to have the prettier dress at prom.

???

I’m sure its a political means of barriers to competition, but I can’t seem to find any economic analysis on the subject.

Well, in that case, perhaps this is an opportunity for you to do some research, write a paper, and then submit it to the Ludvig von Mises Institute.

I think that might be because no one particularly cares about those specific laws. All regulations (as Daniel indicated) have the same basic result.

If you could prove through analysis that they have a negative consequence, we already know that a priori, so it is somewhat redundant.

I think a paper that focuses on said issue would add to wealth of society.

Cool. Lemme know when it is done, and I will edit it for you. [;)]

Whenever any such regulations come up, just think if it would be worth starving all of Africa just to make sure African workers were “safe” enough.

At the bar I work at we go over the max occupancy of 94 every other thursday, every friday and saturday during school semesters. I bet there’s like 150 people in our bar on those nights.. no one has said a word to us about controlling this.

I figure that, if a customer felt endangered by being in a bar that is crowded, would not the customer leave?

In fact, they do do this. I will card an individual and this individual’s friends, they will walk in, and upon seeing how crowded it is, they will turn and walk out. Possibly this may not be due to danger, it could just be one theory as to why they leave.
