Does Ron Paul support it or does anyone have any idea as to whether he would support it (I googled it, but couldn’t find Ron Paul’s opinion on it)? In your opinion, is it a good idea, or does it set a dangerous precedent?
I know that his son is a sponsor, but it violates Antifederalism (states supreme over the Federal government), so I don’t know if Ron Paul supports it. That’s why I don’t support it. It’s 14th Amendment legislation, and it sets a dangerous precedent when the Federal government gives rights. Rights should come from local governments and it should be up to the local governments to decide the powers of the higher up governments, if government exists, even though I wish it didn’t.
There is no right to a job, there is a right to attempt to attain a job. (This goes under the assumption there are natural rights, although I personally believe rights do not exist.)
Fundamentally, actual “rights” have more to do with people leaving you alone/not interfering with you or your property. When people talk about a “right” to healthcare or to a job or to whatever what they really mean is an “entitlement”.
The way I see it, the negative consequences from a Law Giving You The “Right” To Hit Me With A Brick are best avoided by repealing such law, and not by proposing a new Law Giving Me The “Right” To Duck. There is no such thing as a “right” to not be hit by a brick.
Part of the issue seems to be that the nation views the government as the provider of rights, a frightening idea to be sure. That is the consequence of having a specific bill of rights, which is itself a section of positive action of law (despite the negative nature of some amendments). It implies that the populace did not have said rights before, etc.
When the rights of individuals are under the protection of the government, they will inevitably be violated, the metaphorical bodyguard mugging the VIP. Because the only able violators are governments themselves, it seems more like hiring a thief to watch your home while you are on holiday. This, of course, will not change until the mentality of the populace changes, recognizing that rights are entirely natural, or at least derived outside of the government.
