I wonder how much this is really goind to cost; it not only increases the size of the AmeriCorps by 333%, and it’ll be paying out $500 to students and $1000 to those 55 and older, so that’s an expense as well.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Obama also want to tie a tax-credit to this as well?
"People 55 and older could earn $1,000 education awards by getting involved in public service. Those awards can be transferred to a child, grandchild or even someone they mentored.
Students from sixth grade through senior year of high school could earn a $500 education award for helping in their neighborhoods during a new summer program."
So basically, “if you volunteer, I will pay you with someone else’s money that I stole.”
What part of that has to do with “Calling on Americans to volunteer,”
“we’ll perpetuate a system of theft, by encouraging even more theft”.
This program could have unintended consequences…the government may be suddenly overwhelmed with volunteers if the economic climate continues and they won’t be have the funds to pay to all the “volunteers”, therefore they’ll have to raise taxes (directly or via inflation) on everyone else…which negates the benefit of instituting such a silly program in the fist place.
And that’s just the economical side of it…at its core it’s basis is the initiation of coercion.
In another light, I can see this moving, eventually, from “voluntary” to “mandatory”…after all, Obama’s website did initially state that it would be “required”, but, due to the controversy at the time, it was removed.
Yay! One more step toward actual socialism! Once it’s expanded to include other types of “volunteer” work, and anyone “is allowed” to participate, we’ll be well on our way to government control of production! And by then we’ll all be wealthy, right? [^o)]
All we need is a few more “disasters”, maybe some government inspired “shortages”, and they’ll have all they need to justify going out and running (or taking over) what little factories we have left.
What a joke this clown is, instead of encouraging young people to get into the workforce to get experience to do daily tasks that the world needs we will make them work for the community for “free education with money we stole.” How is that creating any wealth?
