Anyone know of any other libertarians sites, and the big differences in their communities. For example, Mises.com seems to be a community of anarcho-capitalists, with a sprinkle of minarchists. Perhaps your observations of this site, and other sites differ…
Not clearly Libertarian, rather Conservative-Libertarian, but a great read with many good articles: http://www.socialaffairsunit.org.uk/
I would not recommend the RP forums; some there actually thought the idea of a Paul/Kucinich ticket was realistic. All in all, I find that place infiltrated with more, anti-war Leftists who may or may not bother reading into actual libertarianism. I’m being a bit jaded though, so my opinion is biased. I haven’t visited there in a while though, so it might be different.
To my knowledge, LRC has a more paleo-libertarians, paleo-cons, etc. there. I’ve stopped going there as much since reading into the Newsletter thing. CATO & Reason have more cosmo-libertarians, or whatever; I sometimes visit Reason for some casual reading during workdays.
I’m not sure; I find the entire designation of certain areas on the internet for certain libertarians entirely way too collectivist for comfort; ultimately, I think it will hurt all communities more than it will help. This is partially why I’m working on my own version of newsprism.com, to help possibly put the entire thing into better, less personal perspective.
The Libertypapers seems to have a good variety; although, recently, thee has been a huge influx of so-called “truthers” & RP followers, which has resulted degrading most comment sections into displays of ad-homniem theatre.
For the most part, they put out interesting articles though, especially on the recent D.C. gun ban. Although, I stopped reading them daily mainly because of Mataconis & aforementioned truthers though.
Overall, I prefer the Mises community, since for the most part, people are called out on their arguments and/or comments, and it’s mostly done in an intelligent manner. Arguments & conversations seem more productive that way.
It’s a bit offtopic, but: why would any Libertarian support Kucinich? I’m not really knowledgable in American politics but isn’t he the guy who took great pride in not letting some utilities to be privatized?
Kucinich is a “Civil Libertarian”. Nearly all his individual freedom politics side with that view. Many Paulites like Kucinich for his anti-war stance. Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are typically the only 2 NO votes in congress against the war and many unconstitutional laws.
financialsense.com does’nt mention any political affiliation but do claim to be “a contrarian firm”. The site has endless amounts of quality information. My second favorite site to visit, after this one, is CATO. They have an ability to infiltrate the mass media without losing their values. Also, they seem to be easier to understand for John Q Public. Good idea for discussion, I am always looking for other sites as well.
I think it’s important to prioritize. 10 years ago, I think it was reasonable to consider the slow creep of socialism the primary problem. Today, I believe that the primary problem is the rapid growth of the police and warfare state. I simply am more worried about these. Kucinich is right on these, but wrong on economics. Here’s a list of who else is wrong on economics: every politician except Paul. I also do not accept the notion at the Republicans are in any way better on economics than the Democrats. This misconception is based on two things: The Republicans stealing libertarian rhetoric, and the fact that they promote fascism or corporatism, while the Democrats promote socialism. Between the two, I’d sooner accept socialism than corporatism. However, some people seem to think that it’s better. I think this has a lot to do with Randianism, and the odd idea that “big business is the persecuted minority.” Someone under the influence of these ideas might think that policies which empower corporations are free-market.
Also, Kucinich strikes me as extremely smart. I feel like if I could sit down with him for a few days to study Man, Economy, and State, he’d come around on the economics. I don’t see any chance of bringing Republicans around on murder. As a general principle, I tend to prefer leftists over right-wingers. Leftists and libertarians share similar goals, leftists just don’t understand how to best achieve them. Right-wingers have opposite goals.
I don’t go here very often, but isn’t anti-state.com also a anarcho-capitalist site?
it’s not necessarily LIbertarian but brookesnews.com is a good site for economic commentary from the Austrian perspective. The editor Gerard Jackson is extremely well read in the Austrian/pre-Austrian tradition, and he often posts articles by Frank Shostak and Sean Corrigan. Unfortunately it is only updated once a week. The non-economic articles are similar to what you might read at townhall.com.
I’ll always side with rightists over leftists.
It’s much easier to end corporate subsidies, legalize drugs, open the borders, and even end a war than it is to end Social Security, privatize government monopolies, dismantle a government healthcare system, and wean people off Welfare.
Plus, the right is much more open about their arrogance, the left seems to think no one notices (“liberals are open-minded”).
DK is a smug radical leftist who has no business in American politics.
I’ll agree with the above. As much as I am frustrated by minarchists and conservatives, they are natural allies of mine, and much less work is involved in unravelling the fallacies they believe in than with most left-“anarchists”. I can’t deal with individuals who put cheap rhetoric and emotion above logic. I also detest the intellectual tyranny of the left (anyone who has been in a university should be familiar with it.) Luckily, most of my professors are, to my knowledge, apolitical, or at least they don’t let their biases enter the course.
My hometown site sucks
http://www.lpcolorado.org/forum/
Don’t go about callin folks chickens, they may go about proving they make good chickens. Or, dead site. It’s antiquated and maybe colorado liberwhackians are elitist? Maybe Liberwhackians got somthin’ about bein’ called libertarians? Other way around but that sounds good too
I’m tryin’ to be an optimist, I try to treat everyone like they are a libertarian. When they get sadistic, or controlling, well then they prove they are not to me. Doesn’t stop me from treating them as if they are liberwhackian anyways.
Did anyone else find Bank Run’s post… odd?
“Or, dead site.”?
Ron Paul is an honest, God-fearing man who believes in freedom. What business does he have in American politics?
Now, if the choice were between right and left, I’d see it thus: between being a poor subsistence farmer, which is where stupid liberal policies will put me, and being a slightly richer person, living with the knowledge that there are a few very rich corporations, constantly under threat of imprisonment, which is where conservative policies would put me. I’ll take the liberal side of that one.
Anyway, let’s make a deal. I’ll work on leftists, you work on rightists. Sounds fair to me.
I don’t see why you think that you are more likely to be under the threat of imprisonment from rightists than leftists. Throughout history, it’s generally been leftists that run the worst, most totalitarian police states, and it’s leftists who call for crimes based on speech and thought.
Now, I’m coming from an American perspective, but as I mentioned above, most statist policies that come from the right are much more easily undone than the statist policies that come from the left.
Can you provide some examples of leftists who run the worst, most totalitarian police states? But, really, I was talking about contemporary America. Don’t try to tell me that DK is more likely to lock me up than Bush - unless by that you mean to refer to Bush’s love for the death penalty. In the present day, it is the right, particularly the neocons, proposing these policies.
If statist right-wing policies are so easy to undo, go and undo them. They’ve been around for a long time, which suggests to me that they aren’t so easy to undo.
That’s pretty easy. Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and all the Eatsrn bloc countries they controlled, China currently, Castro’s Cuba, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh’s Vietnam, almost all of the non-Arab African countries, and the list can go on and on, are all examples of the worst most totalitarian leftist police states.
I would not recommend the RP forums; some there actually thought the idea of a Paul/Kucinich ticket was realistic. All in all, I find that place infiltrated with more, anti-war Leftists who may or may not bother reading into actual libertarianism.
I would also not recommend the Ron Paul forums.
They’re just full of idiots with no basic understanding of economics or what RP stands for. They just like the sound of being called a “Constitutionalist,” “bringingthe Republican Party back to its roots,” and being “anti-war.”

So you’re categorizing anyone who calls themselves socialist as left-wing. You and I are clearly operating on a different understanding of left and right. I take mine from Rothbard’s Left and Right - The Prospects for Liberty. Where is your definition coming from?
The left-right axis makes no sense outside of a majority-rule system. That means that you cannot call leftist or rightist the regimes in North Korea or Saudi Arabia.
