The government defines this type of business as part of the “informal” sector, because it most likely isn’t registered with any authorities, doesn’t pay taxes and operates in public space:
These two businesses are part of the “formal” sector, they’ve got friends in high places and work very hard to pay as little taxes as possible. They may even get a helpful bail-out every now and then:
By the way, both of these instances are directly across the street from one another in downtown Sandton, South Africa.
Note: I asked permission from the gentleman who ran the street stall if I could take a picture of his wares. I neglected to ask permission from HSBC or Deutsche Bank if I could take a picture of their shady palaces.
